Im bp1/sza and I rarely if ever get depressed. Pdoc has me on Wellbutrin but I don't know if its doing anything. (I do get bad anxiety.) I read in Scientific American recently that there is such a thing as unipolar mania- bipolar without depression. I don't know if I wouldve had depression after my manic episode in April/May as pdoc put me on enough Seroquil to tranquilize a moose!

Hey Moose, I am in the same boat. I've never experienced depression and I am diagnosed as Bipolar 1. I did some research on unipolar mania as well. I also wondered if the meds I was put on helped me to avoid a crash.

My doctors are now rethinking my diagnosis. They said they can say for sure that I experienced brief reactive psychosis. They don't know what caused it and they have no idea if it will return. I'm in watch and wait mode.

Hi Moose. If you're not depressed and have rarely been, what is the significance of you taking an antidepressant? Just anxiety? Combating any Seroquel sedation? Other? What is your current mood state?

I know that Seroquel can cause sedation. Has your doc considered manipulating that dose? I only ask because mine does. Here's the usual for me in terms of my Seroquel XR dose:

Up - When manic

Up - When agitated and/or anxious without other manic symptoms, but sometimes even depressed with agitation/anxiety

Down - When depressed with low energy, low motivation, and/or little or no agitation/anxiety

Down - When seemingly stable, but with excess sedation

Usually my psychiatrist only modifies my dose up or down by 50 mg and that makes a difference. He only increases by more (100 to 150 mg) if I am very manic.

I get anxiety a lot and sometimes sleep a lot. Maybe that's depression.

I think unipolar mania is an interesting topic.

I am not a doctor. I am concerned though when you report anxiety and are on Wellbutrin. Many people get agitated and/or anxious with Wellbutrin. Do you think Wellbutrin helps you?

I have been very sedated and overwhelmed with sleepiness. My pdoc has just decreased my dose of Seroquel, thankfully.

I feel for you, Moose. You have been struggling for a while now.

Wellbutrin helps with my anxiety. When I go down on it, I get very anxious. I think it's for anxiety and depression. Also doesn't have the sexual side effects of other anti-depressants.

It’s possible. A lot of times, my depressions are mild, where I basically suffer from significant boredom and don’t feel as interested in things as I once was. Then my concentration, stress levels, and anxiety start acting up, and I don’t want to do anything except sleep those negative feelings away. I also don’t find things funny at all -- even stuff that almost made me pee my pants before -- and I rarely smile. Yet I don’t necessarily feel “sad” and I don’t always cry. It’s very anhedonic.
