Hey, gang. Just wondering. I realize I have had far more of this than I ever recognized. It is sometimes hard for me to identify when I am in one.

Probably more often than I think lol. Usually I get a major episode every several years. Every time I get one my symptoms tend to linger for 2-3 years. During that time I probably switch in and out of mixed states a few times.

My worst episodes (with psychosis) were manias with mixed features. Occasionally, I even had depression with mixed features.

The majority of my elevated episodes are more elated or with irritability (fury even) but mixed features arise for me when the episode really worsens, lasts a long time, stress becomes unbearable, and/or I am transitioning to the opposite pole.

I guess I didn't exactly answer how often. Not easy to answer. Maybe a lot, but not the majority of time. My first was clearly at about 16 years old. Dozen or more since then?

Sadly, pretty often. I'd say 2/3 manias were mixed features.

When Im really stressed, mixed episodes are common. Its pretty weird to be toodling along in a slightly manic state, which I prefer and try to adjust the wellbutrin to maintain, and suddenly find myself in tears over something on the news, etc.

I tend to have more mixed episodes that last for a short time than major ones that last once a year for a few weeks. I'm used to them and, honestly, if I have to have episodes would rather deal with them as they are shorter and more tolerable.

Back when I was on multiple med cocktails mixed with antidepressants often. Also back then I let the docs just drop and add meds Willy nilly without any time to get off the half-life of a med before starting a new one. Didn’t take but a small amount of stress to set me off. The last time I had a mixed episode the stupid clinic I was going to said trazadone was for sleep, but it’s an antidepressant and flipped me into an agitated mixed episode I almost lost it. Haven’t had a mixed episode in 5 years. No benzodiazepines, no antidepressants and low stress and a priority on sleep routine has worked wonders. I avoid all OTC 24 meds that can be activating

Looking back, I'd say about 1/3 of my time out of euthymia is in a mixed state.

Nearly all episodes are mixed. If i start depressed or mania (hypo) I'm nearly certain to pop into mixed. With clozapine I don't have many episodes though.

I get an annual mixed episode in summer that is quickly controlled by increased clozapine. This year I feel like I'm having a 2nd but I think it is really situational stuff. I still may see about a few days of increased clozapine to see if I can knock it down. This year I also had a depression that was situation that responded well to a brief increase in my antidepressant and a hypo that responded well to lowering my AD. Both of those were situational I think.

Without clozapine I would be mixed about 85% of the time.
