I did some googling and apparently you can catch this bacteria in tap water.

Quote:
S. maltophilia is a waterborne organism, and exposure to this bacterium can occur both in and outside the clinical setting. In the health care environment, S. maltophilia has been isolated from several sources, including suction system tubing of dental chair units (DCUs) (250), contaminated endoscopes (179), and tap water (297), all of which present possible patient exposure sources. S. maltophilia-contaminated central venous catheters and tap water faucets have been implicated in cutaneous and soft tissue infections in patients with neutropenia (297).
source: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia: an Emerging Global Opportunistic Pathogen

I'm obviously not a doctor, but I wonder if your husband has neutropenia? Apparently people with neutropenia oftentimes do NOT show any symptoms, other than increased risk for infections. That could possibly explain why you didn't catch it, but he did. If he is on certain meds, then those meds can trigger neutropenia. I think you should google his meds to see if they carry this risk. Possibly also check your water filters since it sounds like people on oxygen usually require water as part of the humidifier? If you really want, you can ask for a neutropenia blood test if there are other reasons for a blood test (e.g., if he has diabetes, cholesterol, etc. as well). You can test all those conditions at the same time, so you wouldn't be going out of your way to get it tested if you're also testing for diabetes, cholesterol, etc..

Quote:
You probably won't know that you have neutropenia. People often only find out when they've had blood tests for other reasons.

Hey Blue ... Thanks so much!!! For taking time to look into this further.. Thank you Thank Thank you !!! Yes he has extensive blood work done to rule out neutropenia.. they are also running blood cultures.

We have a well over 300 ft deep, We filter our water, We have sent in a sample of our water for testing.. prior filter and after. We do not run Humidifyers, He hasnt used the water bottle on his Oxygen concentrater for a couple years as that can build up moisture in tubing, We change out his tubing every 2 weeks, But now we are week..

Our Doctor is also frustrated because this infection doesnt want to budge. Im sure next appt on Monday we will be switching to another antibiotic.. We have 2 more oral antibiotics that we can try. The whole goal is to keep him out of the hospital at all costs, because if he catches something on top of this, he wont make it..

Thanks everyone for support..

Argh !

My husbands color was off and I asked him how he was feeling he said worse.. I said whats your Oxygen level ???" I dont know I havent checked it" It was 86 .. I dragged his oxygen tubing to him. Ugh Ugh Ugh ... Well hes color is better and his sat is up to 92

This man is gonna give me a heart attack But at 86 and likely 82 ABG he truly isnt thinking right due to lack of damn oxygen.

I love him but some days I wanna wack him in the head

Yikes! I am glad you noticed and were able to get him some oxygen. Yeah, he's probably not thinking clearly in that state. Hope you're both doing okay today.

Well Damn .. He has been running a low grade temp all day.. 99.1-99.8 Which is not good. We see the Doctor in the morning.. Hes been on his oxygen most all of the day, off he is 87-89.. Hes only 91-92 on But it keeps his heart rate down...

I am hoping this next antibiotic we get tomorrow is the one !
