Christina, I just saw this thread. What you and your husband are going through must be stressful beyond belief. I am so sorry you are both suffering so profoundly. Across the world, through the internet, I am too far to be of any practical help to you, but I promise you will both be with me in my thoughts and meditations. You amaze me with your resilience but I know. even the strongest can break. Don't forget to look after yourself as best you can. I hope things improve fast. x

My husband has been ill almost 3 weeks now we tried an antibiotic and it wasnt helping, So chest xray, labs and sputum culture, started a new antibiotic while we waited on culture to grow out.. Well 3 days later another antibiotic based off what the culture grew out...

He has Stenotrophomonas ( Pseudomonas) Maltophillia an aerobic Gram-negative bacillus.

No idea how he caught this.. Its mainly something you catch in the hospital by way of irrigation solutions, IV fluids, medical implants or Aquatic enviroments ... Which he has had none of these since last August while in the hospital. This is not something that just lingers in the body and pops up months later.

I ran by the Oxygen company we use and picked up doubles of Oxygen tubing and nebulzing cups and tubes. They will be cleaned daily and changed out..

He is now on Oxygen fulltime not just at night as his oxygen level is far to low. He is beyond exhausted. Hes awake for me to feed him, Make sure he takes his meds, Nebulizes and I wake him every 2 hours to keep him pushing fluids at a minimum of at least a gallon a day.

Vital signs every 4 hours around the clock.

We see our Doctor again on Monday unless he spikes a temp or his breathing gets worse while using oxygen 24/7 ...

This is a nightmare.
Hopelessly behind on posts and just seeing this now. Sending prayers and support your way. I hope they find the right bug juice forthwith and that he starts feeling better soon!!!!!

Thanks everyone...

Steve is no better but no worse, Hes just very very tired and is hurting because of all the coughing. His lungs actually sound half way decent , well for him with COPD and this infection. He sleeps most of the time. His vitals are stable... Even once he beats this infection its going to take a long time to recover... That is a growing fear of mine that he might not be able to fully recover and then need oxygen 24/7 instead of just while sleeping... I'm very scared for our future..

I am so sorry ~Christina.
I've been hoping his extreme fatigue is due to the fact that his body is working so hard on healing. I've been hoping Steve will totally recuperate.

I'm not done hoping, praying and waiting patiently with you.
I am here for you, my friend.

Don't know if it is helpful or not but mum was on oxygen 24/7 about ten years ago. She had a big producer tank in the dining rm and very long tubes that reached all over the house. A service that bought her smaller tanks to use outside the house. But she did get better. I think it was about 3 years she was on it. I thought when she was in the hospital in November and they put her back on that was it again but by the time they moved her to the nursing home it was night only. Then when she was discharged home they followed up with home care but said she no longer needed it. So it is possible he could recover enough to go back to nights only.

We are all working hard to keep him out of the Hospital his Vitals are still doing okay, Low oxygen level even on oxygen but that is what it is with COPD.
