Reward programs work best for me. I’ve heard that is a thing that works really well for people on the spectrum. When I was a teenager I’d get gift cards or fast food if I did what I was supposed to and it really worked well and eventually I just kinda got the hang of things. When I didn’t want to go to my work program when I was 18 my job coach said she’d take me out to lunch if I stayed. Which I did. Another job coach said she’d get me a bookstore gift card if I did what I was supposed to.
I don’t know. I’m just weird the things that work for me. In the job world I do well with team challenges and I won the challenge one time for my team and we all got gift cards. So it still works.

Dear Mountaindewed,
I'm glad the reward programs work well for you. What works best for me is medication and cognitive therapy techniques. I hope you get many responses to your post. Sincerely yours, Yao Wen |

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has worked the best, by far, for me.
Hi Mountaindewed. That's nice that rewards help motivate you, but my only concern about that is the fact that life sometimes must be lived and things achieved, even without rewards. That's a sad lesson to have to learn in life. I even think children must learn that. However, I do think we need to give ourselves pats on the back when we succeed in achieving things, or pushing ourselves to do things that seem difficult, or are undesirable, but necessary. We can't expect others to always be rewarding us. Expecting that can lead to lots of disappointment in life. Last edited by Soupe du jour; Dec 21, 2020 at 05:24 PM. |

Yeah that’s what I learned when the big reward programs ended when I was a teenager. How to get things done myself without a reward. Although now I’ll reward myself if I complete a stressful task. But I don’t reward myself with anything huge. Usually it’s just like a TV show or a soda.
Not sure that’s a healthy thing to do either.

Medication because, well, it's medication.
CBT, because it gives me a simple structure and a plan to use any time, anywhere. Psychodynamic therapy is helpful because it provides insight, and stimulates my mind in order to enlighten new ways to solve old issues. Group, whether support or therapy, is a format I feel very comfortable with.
