My pdoc thinks a hobby would be good for me to focus on something different and help with some of my symptoms. I am looking at the community college to see what they have. If you were to pick up a hobby or go to the community college what would you take?

I'm needing this too... pick a hobby but its so expensive for me to go to college.
I would love to learn more BSL (British Sign Language), if I could draw even slightly a drawing class would be fab, maybe a step on course like politics or psychology just a basics course so I had a foundation of it. I tried Maths and was unsuccessful and I paid for that, that was over a decade ago. I think I would still be unsuccessful even now |

That sounds really good. i'd focus on what you already like doing on your free time to pick up new hobbies. i'd like to study cinema and the arts more generally but that is just what i'd do. Definitely focus on yourself to understand what may potentially interest you. Do keep us updated if you want to. Sending many Safe, Warm hugs to BOTH you, @Crook32, your Family, your Friends and ALL of your Loved Ones! Keep fighting and keep rocking NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS, OK?!

Mickey makes a good point about taking something you already like (like to do), further. For example, I love baking and cooking, so I can have loads of fun making new recipes, blogging about recipes, taking photos of finished cooking creations, watching cooking shows, chatting on Reddit.com's Cooking subreddit. Etc. I also love flowers and gardening. The latter compliments my love of cooking. Even in the winter I can take care of flowers/plants or even create an indoor herb garden. You might want to create a bullet list of things you like or like to do. It could be a list of things you USED TO like. Brainstorm them and then follow various avenues. |

Getting into a hobby is a great idea. Mine contribute a lot to my current stability. I like writing, painting, and cooking, so I would take one of those classes.

I took cake decorating. That’s fun plus you get to eat your work. Mum took upholstery and redid our house furniture. Some friends loved what she did so she did some free lance work. The community college near me has had classes in photography, scrapbooking, short story writing and poetry writing. And we have an arts building that offers various free forums art and pottery classes. I’d love to take a scrapbook class. My daughter makes beautiful books but I need a class in how to. If you have a car maybe they have a 101 auto upkeep? I’d like to take some history classes just cause I love history. But where I live now doesn’t do interpreters and I need them.

I've been doing Spanish online for free for about a year and a half through Duolingo. They have lots of languages. I've really enjoyed it and haven't missed a day in 555 days.

I play Scrabble, which is different from saying i LIKE playing Scrabble. It's just something i do to pass the time and keep my mind active and keep a toe-hold in the greater world thru Scrabble club. I also journal all thru the day, more for company than anything else. I used to read before i got really sick at 29. Now i can't read for pleasure anymore. I really miss it. I've tried mightily to develop other hobbies as i'm on disability benefits and have loads of time. I've tried creative writing, dating, picture-editing, yoga, belly-dancing, poetry, guitar, recorder, piano, fitness hula-hooping, vegetarian cooking, walking, dog training, sewing, stamp collecting, Bridge, Chess, coloring, drawing, puppet-making, adult ballet, aerobics, water-aerobics, veganism, trivia contests, French, German, comedy, attending pro football games, acting, knitting, crochet, rug-hooking, quilting, finger-painting, Church, collage, line-dancing, biking, meditation, etc.
I just don't seem to like anything, or be good at anything. I've pretty much accepted that i'll have to make do with my mediocre Scrabble game which i've played for twenty years, journaling, listening to music, my dog and TV. At times i like Scrabble, like during the Fall of 2018 when i went to a tournament in Toronto and did really well (tho i did not win). Scrabble's got me out socializing with people and has enriched my life a lot. It's just i'm a sore loser and i don't seem to be able to overcome it so the actual act of playing is often unpleasant. I think i have alexithymia from my anti-psychotics. This is a tendency to be concrete in thought and expression and lack imagination and an inability to detect your own emotions. It's a steep price to pay for staying in touch with reality but i guess it's better to be safe and calm then wild and creative and in some jail in Thailand. You can learn it free online at duolingo. I'm doing Spanish there and it's been a good experience.
