Metformin

I started clozaril about three months ago and have seriously gained weight because of it. My doctor just put me on metformin. If you take that has it helped you lose weight?

I was put on it to help with antipsychotic induced weight gain, it definitely helped me lose weight but it made my blood sugar drop too low so I had to get off it. I kept having low blood sugar episodes where I would be shaking, nauseous, feeling weird, confused, etc so had to stop it unfortunately. I wish that wasn't the case because it helped me lose weight. I was on 1,000 mg of it

I’ve been on topamax before. Which can also be used for med weight gain. I lost 20 pounds but it stopped working and the hunger came back and so did the 20 pounds. Once I got off it I started losing weight again strangely.

I only lost 5 pounds with it but it did give me stomach problems. To lose weight I’d have to go off my AP and that’s not happening anytime soon because I’m stable.

If I lost any weight on Metformin it wasn't more than 7lbs. So something, but nothing dramatic.

I am diabetic and was on metformin for years. Metformin can cause some people to lose weight. For me it always upset my stomach a little bit but I did maintain a somewhat steady weight while on it. YMMV

I went on it soon after going on clozaril. It stopped the weight gain and I lost about 15 lbs and maintained that until stress eating the weight back after losing a family member last year. I've lost about 6 lbs again. I had to stop it recently because another non-psych med was causing GI issues and the metformin wasn't helping. I'm hoping to get off the bad med soon and get back on it.

Protein at night helps a lot as I don't eat as much then. I will sleep-eat on clozaril at times so if I'm full when I go to bed it is better.

I was diagnosed as a Type II diabetic about 7 years ago. I had multiple Drs prescribe Metformin. No, it didn't help me lose weight. Truthfully, I didn't see any benefit in taking it at all.

After about 5 years of taking Metformin I got frustrated with it. I hate taking meds. I started doing some research on my own and learned that Type II diabetes is 100% reversible if a person is willing to make the necessary lifestyle changes to make it happen. I haven't taken any meds for my diabetes in 18 months. In fact, I had my annual checkup today. My A1C was 6.7. Not perfect by any means, but below 7.0 which is where my current Dr. starts to get concerned.

I don't plan to ever take that or any other Diabetes med again.

I lost maybe 10lbs ( ? ) of psych med induced weigh gain but my GI track said HELL NO. I have since been dianosed Type 2 Diabetes and following a strict diabetic diet has allowed me to lose a decent amount and keep it off. My husband says at least 30 but I wont weight myself. I am fitting in much smaller clothes that I haven't been able to wear in over a year.

Cut way down on carbs and you will notice a difference.

My daughter and her cousin is on a carb free diet and losing weight pretty well.

I lost 33 pounds since taking metformin. I'm still losing slowly.

Thanks every one for the responses! It sounds like everyone has different experiences with it. I've been on it for about a week now, so no weight loss yet. I'm a vegetarian so can't go on a no carb diet.
