I wanted to ask if anybody had experience with 988 that they were comfortable sharing. I text 741741 myself because I know I can be honest and they won’t come drag me out of the house. Interested in other perspectives. Thanks.

My experience with 988 was, I hope, not typical. I was in either a manic or mixed state, posting here a lot, and Nammu so kindly told me that I could do a chat with 988. I don't like to text and I was in no shape to talk. Anyway, there was a problem with their website and the person I has started to chat with told me to restart my computer. Seriously? I couldn't even think of how to push a button. So I just logged off.

This might have been due to my mental state at the time (hypomania with a fair share of agitation), but I found the guy who answered my last 988 call irritatingly slow. Not just slow, but tentative. Almost afraid to engage. For someone who finds alot of help in talking out their trains of thought, slow and tentative doesn't offer much aid. Hypomania doesn't offer other people the chance to keep up much either.

I will say I've had people on 988 be refreshingly direct in a "Let's get to the heart of your troubles and make sure you're safe." For me, it suppose it depends on the person I get connected to.

I used the online chat and it was frustrating. I too had an elevated mood and was frustrated at how slow the person was. I was super paranoid and it took an hour and a half of me explaining the situation only to get a "call your mental health providers" response.

I have not tried 988 yet, but I did call my local crisis line. I find it helpful sometimes and not others. Depends on who you get.

My hope is that things will get ironed out/improved after a while, since it's a new service. x fingers crossed x

From my understanding of how it works the 988 is just a way to quickly hook people up with local services. So you are still using the same existing service it’s just an easier one fits all number that now includes text and chat. So me here in Minnesota will be hooked up with the local mh crisis line, Beth will be hooked up with California services. So it’s only as good as the local services. To improve there needs to be broader awareness and money funneled into making it better.

This text line 741741 also works for Canada. It's good to know. We don't have 988 here yet.

I used 988 this past Sunday. I chatted with someone on my laptop. I had a good experience with it. She gave me two websites with listings for possible counseling service companies. She also made sure I didn't need to have help sent to my location. I would use again if I felt i needed it. I like texting better than talking. I am a bit of a shy person. But it is a new service so they are probably trying to work out all the kinks.

It’s happened to e too. Police officer and then he Called an ambulance.
