I have learned today of a whole new class of antipsychotics that do not act on dopamine receptors.

Cobenfy was approved in 2024 by the FDA.

FDA Approves Drug with New Mechanism of Action for Treatment of Schizophrenia | FDA

Other drugs in this class are in development.

NeuRA | Understanding Cobenfy: A conversation with NeuRA’s Dr Tertia….

For now, the approval is for Schizophrenia, but often antipsychotics are approved for Schizophrenia first, for Bipolar second, and as an adjunct treatment for MDD third.

Cobenfy is not for anyone with liver or urinary issues, though, even when these issues are mild.

My Pdoc ruled it out because of my history of high liver enzymes and urinary retention.

I was disappointed to see the US FDA pass on approving psychedelics as a treatment option. Psilocybin, MDMA, and Ketamine have shown promise in treating depression. While Psilocybin and MDMA are approved for treatment in Australia, only Ketamine is being used off label by clinics in the US. Mental health accounts for an estimated 30% of US health care costs, so anything that might disturb the marketplace has to be very carefully considered. One problem with psilocybin is that the mushrooms can be grown in a tub in a warm dark place. While not as easy as growing tomatoes, it is just as rewarding. All the necessary ingredients are available on line and micro-dosing has become a trend in silicon valley.

Where was that figure 30% of US healthcare spent on mental health determined?

It would appear I pulled the 30% figure out of thin air. Googling, I did find sources that suggested mental health costs were 5% of total health expenditures, and one source
even said that mental health costs were 30% higher than expected. lol
