I am bp1. I'm not in any regular therapy but I do see a pdoc. We meet, talk and, make sure the meds are still working.. He always asks if I need to see a t and I always say no. Right now I'm good. I'm level. But I was wondering what type of therapy other BP'ers have. I see where some have no therapy and some have been in therapy for years. I met the t and she told me she didn't do any long term therapy and she only did CBT. Now. My question is, how can CBT help some one that is Bipolar?

LOL - ...or do I need to go to therapy to find out? CBT for Bipolar?

I haven't found a good balance of meds yet, but therapy has been a life saver for me on more than a few occasions. I figure even if I do find a good balance of meds I'm going to want to have a t on board and ready to help out when things get rocky becuase inevitably they are going to get rocky again. I can't tell you specifically how CBT and bipolar disorder go together but I know that I am grateful for my t and it's probably the only thing keeping me sane through all the medication changes and what-not. Take care.

Hi Liberada,

I have bi-polar also, and follow a medication regimine as well as weekly therapy. I also was inpatient in a specialized program several years ago which also offered group CBT. It wasn't geared towards those with bi-polar only. I was at a really bad place back then, and it did seem to get me through the rough spots.

Wish you well in your decision!

Dee

Thank you gravyyy and Dee ... no decisions to make really. The pdoc knows I'll call the t when the time comes. And it will come, I'm sure. Right now I'm ok. I would say "unfortunately" I know how bad it can get. But since I know how far down the spiral goes, I'm fortunate to know when I need to start making calls.

I'm glad I have you all at PC as well! CBT for Bipolar?

CBT is very effective with people with bipolar. I am currently in a group with a therapist who is teaching DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy). Most of the other women in the group have borderline personality disorder, but with my bipolar 1, I fit right in!!--Suzy
