hi guys, i just realised i have BPD a week ago. before this, i thot my erratic behaviour was due to depression, insecurity, anger management issues, worry, narcissm. now i finally realised what i am suffering from and why.

i don't know if knowing i have BPD is better or worse. at least i had hope for change previously. now, after reading so much on this condition and hearing therapists say it cannot be cured, i will suffer a lifetime of bad relationships, it makes me feel defeated and hopeless.

but i refuse to believe it. that's why i am here. glad to have found this forum.

Your therapists point of view is an old rationale, but common. There is no pill you can take that will cure it, but there are meds you can take to help deal with overlapping symptoms ie. depression, anxiety. BPD can't be cured, but there are alot of relatively new therapies, DBT being the most common, that can teach new ways in which to cope, and is relatively successful.

Jessie,

Don't believe what the therapists say. With the right therapy, BPD is definitely manageable. There are no guarantees that you won't have flare-ups on occasion, but for the most part, it is manageable. A lot of therapists give a really bad name to BPD and make us look like we are completely bonkers and have no hope for help. This is not true. If you have a therapist who is making you feel like this, it is time to get a new one!

I think that DBT ~Dialectical Behavioral Therapy~ is very helpful in working through our thoughts and emotions. Dr. Marsha Linehan is the one who really started and defined this therapy styles as being particularly helpful in treating BPD.

I saw a 4-set of her DVD's when I was in the hospital a while back & could have sworn that she was simply talking to me. She gives complete descriptions of the different aspects of what DBT focuses on. DBT has been found to be helpful in a variety of mental illnesses recently, but has been found to have significant impact on BPD, when the person is ready to try to make changes within their life.

About 1 year ago, Dr. Linehan came forward and admitted to having BPD herself. If SHE can come forward after 30 years of sensation and give her own story of success, than there must be hope for others. Right?

Hey Jesse, I agree with shez about the DBT--it has shown to be affective in treating BPD, but it takes a lot of work.

Also Jesse, we're glad to have you here...I'm sure you'll find many supportive people and many others that you can relate to.

I know that I thought I would end up having a miserable life, with horrible relationships and mood swings too...but even just working on DBT for awhile, I've found quite a bit of hope.
Best to you

Thank you everyone, I refuse to give up hope. I may not be cured fully, but I am sure I can get better. It is the constant mindfulness that is so so tough. Basically I cannot afford to let myself feel defeated, because that is when I will do silly things to ruin my life and spiral downwards.

Firstly i would make sure this is definately your diagnosis and from there look into DBT groups and other support groups which can help you come to terms with the condition and hopefully manage some of the symptoms. According to the clinical psychologist who held the DBT group i attended, BPD apparently gets better over time. You may never be 100% free of it but there are definately ways of coping with it should you take a proactive approach. I hope you continue to find this place informative and supportive.
