In the rear area of combat (pun intended) someone is assigned everyday to burn the crapper. They pull the 1/2 barrels out from under the seats of the outhouse, pour in about a gallon of diesel fuel, and set it ablaze.

Black smoke rises without a single environmental protest.

The smell is significant, to say the least, and it's one of those memories that stays with you over the years.

The outhouses were blazing hot, so it seemed less civilized than using the green latrine out there in the jungle. And the smell inside the outhouses was worse than the porta-potties rented by every street fair and construction site around the world today.

That slit-trench in the jungle would be a good alternative to the porta-potties, but there would probably be some do-good environmentalist who would complain.

I have used plenty of outhouses in my younger days and the smell was bad enough without burning it. I can't imagine burning it! yuck!
