On my laptop, the computer I use all the time now, I picked up a really obnoxious piece of malware called "System Security." It took over everything and wouldn't let any other programs run, but I was able to restart in safe mode and reset the computer to before I had the malware, so now the computer works again. Except that now even though it shows that it is connected to internet (wireless), none of my programs are able to recognize a connection. It says that I'm not connected, or the host can't be found, etc. I have tried resetting my internet connection (although it works on this computer), and rebooting the laptop, and repairing the connection, and disabling and re-enabling the radio, and disconnecting and reconnecting, and trying to detect other connections. Nothing makes a difference. Any ideas?

And if you start getting popup messages from System Security informing you that your computer is under attack, or is infected with spyware, viruses, etc., exit everything immediately before it has a chance to take over. System Security is the virus. It won't let you close the popup windows - you have to shut down the computer. And you might be able to restart and run your virus software, but I had to go to safe mode to do anything. Even task manager was not able to open, although it tried really hard.

I didn't get anything done all day, waiting for answers from the tech support for my virus protection program, and the guy blew me off all day. I won't have time to do anything else with the computer until next week sometime. I wish he would have just said he didn't know, and i could have found help someplace else. Some program (I think the virus detector) is not allowing programs to connect. There ought to be a simple way to tell the program the threat is over and please let me use my computer now. Or if the program still finds a threat, I wish the program would say what it is and what it wants me to do.

It feels like an overprotective mother who won't let me live my life because it's too dangerous. I'm triggered, and depressed and irritable, and I spent all day trying to get my computer to work and didn't accomplish anything, and forgot to sleep or eat or drink any water or anything, and felt like hurting myself several times. Ugh.

Hello (((Rapunzel))) ask your company about running housecalls, it may help. I am not a computor wizz so I don't know if it will work for you but I have used it in the past for a back up scan. It is free to use.
Good luck.

((((((((((((( Rap )))))))))))))

So sorry you got this issue...it's a true pain in the backside. Housecall is a good site and there is also this place that may help as well -

Good luck with removing it....please be very careful if doing it manually....it's a real kicker and if done incorrectly can ruin your system

I've used that before too, I think. My virus detector, which is trend micro, turned out to be the problem. I had the virus removed, and the virus detector had a firewall up and wouldn't let me online. My husband took my laptop to work and had one of their techies figure it out today. It's my own computer, but I use it so that I can do some of my work from home. It seems to be fine now, but I won't be re-subscribing to Trend Micro again.

I'm so glad it was easily remedied by the techie for you. Sorry to hear about the Trend Micro trouble....there are tons of others out there and I hope you find one that works well for you.
