hehe Fool I am a little different. I do believe the word is only as harmful as you make it out to be.

Echoes has a point...I forgot to say that I noticed that too: One can choose that word (spelled out, to boot!) from a drop down menu but you can't type it out in a forum or it'll get censored, for example. Irony is right!

I had an idea. If the poll results end up in an almost even split, maybe they could fix it so you can hide certain moods from your view???? Just like you can choose whether to show other member's signatures, avatars, etc. Maybe there could be an option of what moods someone wants displayed whenever they select a mood. That way anything they find offensive or will never use anyway won't appear at all.

The mood icon could also be invisible to that person when they view a post by a member who used that icon. Just like posts from an "ignored" member are hidden from view.

BTW, that mood icon for "*****y" is the same one for "arguing" from the list of smiles available when you post in the forums. Just click on "more", and it's in there.

Just suggestions...though people rarely listen to mine.

P.S. I pay more attention to what someone wrote than their mood at the time of log in. I also find that icon a little funny even though it looks sort of mean as well!

My son was telling me that on a community he visits you can choose the level of censored words you want to read. Like censor everything, medium or none at all. Something like that, anyway.

When I was brand new here somebody posted a link to a psych site but it was spam. I posted WT* except the * was F. I got chastised by a mod saying I had bypassed the censor editor. Huh? I thought what I posted WAS edited already. I never did understand that.

Well, Yoda...it could be technically done then. Yeah, that is odd. I mean that looks like it's already censored to me, like typing *********. Censoring levels is an idea too..

Thanks, Notz for putting all that history of the word. I never knew the word was so old and has not always meant something negative.
Thanks for this!

I agree. Besides doesn't the mood reflect the current mood rather than the mood the poster was in when the post was written?

Also I guess I feel like a person has a right to use whatever word they want to describe themself or what they feel like. JMO but since your describing YOURSELF and not someone else you should be able to use whatever word you want to.

Are some users reading this thread through a filter or something? I'm seeing the word "*****y" uncensored throughout this thread, not as asterisks or whatever but as the letters bee, eye, tee, etc.

This is turning out to be an interesting thread...

Yeah, Yoda you're right. The mood icon is only showing the mood at the last log in, or the last time the member changed it. I noticed it's RETROACTIVE, so it changes ALL of your posts to show that mood even though you were unlikely in that mood at the time of THAT post. I never liked that, because it's not accurate. That's why I take the "current" mood with a "grain of salt", cause they could have even forgotten to change it, for weeks at a time even. So it's not necessarily "current".

Agree with Rmdctc...one should be able to use what they want.

The word *****y comes through uncensored for me too, but I don't use the same computer everytime either. Sometimes a public one, sometimes my boyfriend's. I don't have my own....(Try not to have a coronary!)

On another note I don't like ANY of the mood icons because my vision is somewhat impaired & I see a block of color but have trouble reading the text. Likewise sometimes when folks post in light colors I have difficulty reading it & will use the "quote" function so I can read it in black text. Comprende?

I'm so used to that problem that I didn't even find it worth mentioning. Dark on dark doesn't show up well for me, perhaps because I already keep my monitor set a bit toward the dark side to keep plain-white backgrounds from getting too glary. Then again, I don't usually bother flying a mood icon myself and don't pay all that much attention to anyone else's.

I've done that too on occasion. Another way around difficult colors and fonts is to select (highlight) the text (which may already make it more readable) and if that's not enough, look at it in Clipboard Viewer or Notepad.

What, you don't know what Clipboard Viewer and Notepad are?! Just ask any computer nerd, and maybe go back an older version of Windows if you have to.

I don't find it offensive per se but as said earlier, "unnecessary."

I don't think I responded, but I'll respond with, I'm not offended.

So this morning I got up, staggered into the kitchen to start fixing breakfast, and turned on the radio. There was a commercial. "Laura, a former art teacher, was a *****"...?!

But no, that was just what I heard. What it really turned out to say was that she was "a bit shy" (but fit in just fine at the retirement home they were advertising).

Closed already? I thought poll was running until 5:30 pm today, but I guess that meant Eastern time.

Well, it's been quite a ride. I thought the poll results might even out a bit. Maybe not enough people came across it to participate. If they are going to keep this word in the choices, they could add "macho" or "studlike" to even the playing field. LOL LOL LOL

Funny post, Fool Zero! But in today's world, I wouldn't be shocked if they actually said what you thought. Nothing shocks me anymore.

As long as someone else doesn't call me *****y, I don't mind. I think it's fine if you're calling yourself *****y. However, we could change it to "belligerent," or however you spell it. That's just as good.

Could've meant even farther east than that. I'm not sure what time Peg was referring to but I understand she's on UK time.

That's an idea too, Another Day....Also, it's not "gender specific".

Yeah, if someone feels that way, that's okay as long as she's not like that to members. Besides, that's against guidelines anyway no matter what mood icon she picks!

UK time, Fool Zero?? I think they are 8 hours ahead of me, not 3!

I find this thread really interesting, even though I just noticed it is almost a year old!

That made me wonder if "mean" or "nasty" are moods to we can choose. I checked and neither is on the list. I'm not sure what this all means. Maybe we should include "mean" and "nasty" since they apply to both men and women and not have "*****y"? A word I use to describe men when they are being *****y is "pissy." (Can be used for women as well.) Don't know if others use that, but I don't see it on the mood list either. I think the equivalent word for men would be "testy" as the root of that word is testosterone. Testy is not on the mood list either.

I personally don't really look at people's moods on PC and I never use them on my own profile. I don't like *****y people so if someone was using the *****y icon and I noticed it, it might make me want to avoid them. But that's their problem if they find themselves isolated by always being *****y, right? Just like in real life.

I also find that there are some very touchy people on PC who can indeed be mean and nasty. And they don't use any sort of identifying icon. Mean behavior occurs whether one puts a little picture on it or not.

I don't like the PMS choice. But I don't like it in real life either when people blame their behavior on their hormones. JMO. Also, if someone says they are "PMS", it doesn't really tell me what their mood is. It could mean touchy, *****y, pissy, grumpy, weepy, etc. Why not just say directly what mood you are having instead of saying "PMS"?

Interesting thread! Even though the poll is closed, I would probably have voted to not do away with the *****y icon because I am not keen on censorship.
