How would I go about requesting the creation of a forum dedicated to the Recovery model and practicing its concepts to support one another?

This is essentially what I refer to, though there are other posts here that mention it:

The Recovery model follows the premise that we are our own experts in our care. With the right tools and support (each individual person is different as to what that is), anyone can recover from their mental health challenges/co-occurring issues and become all we were meant to be; rediscovering hope and empowerment, finding the power of making our own choices (and given the opportunity to stumble without shame) to meet our goals and find our dreams. We learn to advocate for ourselves, and experience the power of Peer Supporters to help us along the way as we need it.
Thanks for this!

Well, no, this is a merely a thread under Community Feedback.

I'm talking more about something that shows up as a forum itself - like "New Member Introductions" and "Community Feedback and Technical Support" are.

Hi and to PC!

That sounds good but why not get to know PyschCentral unless I read that wrong because this is a great place for support I believe that is what DocJohn started building on. People helping people and learning to advocate from supporting one another.... a good idea though

You could set it up as a social group yourself. http://forums.psychcentral.com/group.php click Create a New Group then if it takes off and you get enough members it will then become a forum.

Good luck!

Oooookaaaaay. I was under the impression that this forum IS for just that, instead of filling DocJohn's mailbox and running the risk that he might not see the request. You asked how to request, and I said you just did??? I'm pretty sure (though I've been wrong in the past) that Admin do read here.

This is indeed the place to make new forum requests.

I'm not certain we need a separate forum for this, since it is something that would be practiced across all forums and in everything we do. We always encourage individuals to become e-patients -- empowered, education patients -- who are partners in their treatment and treatment decisions. You might also be interested in the Society for Participatory Medicine, which advocates just this model (but under different terminology):

http://participatorymedicine.org/

In the meantime, as others have suggested, you might consider starting a social group and we'll see how it goes from there.

Thanks for the suggestion!

DocJohn,

It is somewhat similar but not quite the same. Seems like that Society focuses more on being empowered patients, whereas Recovery focuses on much more than one's medical/physical needs. Recovery is an amalgamation bringing together one's spiritual beliefs, their support network and environment in which they live, hope to realize dreams and become all they were meant to be, the strength to make their own choices and have the 'right to fail', and of course that empowerment to be the expert in their own care.

I will concede that taking this one step at a time isn't a bad idea, and will work toward making a social group to start off with.

Thanks,
K
