What a trial that was! Finally online with DSL

So MUCH I learned, and figured I'd share some of it.

I went with High Speed over the phone line. Then had to add a router so I can use my notebook from my bed (desk top has all the wires) Finally online with DSL

I have spent HOURS on END with techs from both the ISP and the router trying to maintain a continuous connection.

Not only did I have to contact the DSL provider to set it up (despite their advertisement of "easy" switchover) it took 45 minutes with them giving me direct commands (click on, open, type in, close, click on...) because there is NO WAY you can do all that on your own (non geeks)

Then you have new security settings. ANd adding the router??? ugh more changes and more options.

STILL I went days with on-again off-again dsl and internet connection. Finally online with DSL

I happened to read something somewhere that mentioned having Residential alarm on the phone line... ah ha!

I called my alarm service and sure enough... NOW I have to buy a special filter for the house alarm... not only will the dsl mess up the notification of an alarm, but I realized that I have to leave the alarm OFF when I want to be online. Finally online with DSL

Just thought you'd want to know. If I learn anything more on this, I'll post.

KEWL!!! - I am glad to hear that all is good now, minus having to leave the alarm off.... if it helps any I had to go thru the same struggle with setting up my DSL and Router - Big Sigh!!

AND - just your luck my husbands knows a lot about home alarms..... so tell me exactly what the problem is and I will ask him.

Ok - I talked to hubby and he said that YES you will need to buy a Special DSL Filter (a 6 pin plug) that cost around $30 (plus service fee) and that you should not have to leave your alarm off while on the computer - just that it will not be able to send a signal to the monitoring place if someone was to break in during the time you are online, but the alarm will still sound on your end.

Good Luck.........

LOL well, a filter will fix it...and I'm having them send it to me so I won't have to pay for a visit ( add ons aren't covered under my warranty servicing.)

I can't set the alarm and have the DSL working at the same time! When I set the alarm, I can't get online. Finally online with DSL

Yes, that's what really irked me, is that NO ONE KNOWS how much trouble it is to go to DSL until they DO IT. The tech assured me EVERYONE has to call them to be able to get online with DSL. I doubt many ppl would buy into this if they knew that in advance. PLUS the price is high considering the hassle, if you ask me Finally online with DSL 3 months discount doesn't cut the time and energy I've had to exert so far...not counting the frustration...

waiting online for India? NOT my cup of tea.

Hubby says that should not be happening..... some one did not set your alarm and DSL up right.
.... Was the alarm working good before the DSL was set up?

GRRRR Well, after spending an average of an hour a day with the tech booting my system up each day, correcting tabs etc... they have finally decided that the modem they sent me is bad. (bad modem, bad bad modem!)

THEN they say it will cost me $39.95 to have a new one sent to me. HUH? I just paid $20 to have this one sent to me on the 15th or so... grrrr Of course, I immediately talked to customer service and explained how unreasonable that is, and they are refunding the charge. (Well we will see if that's true, won't we?)

Finally online with DSL I'm on dial up now...and yes there is a difference I don't like!!! I can't seem to produce even half of what I can with DSL high speed....

unfortunately.. I haven't been able to use the router I bought, which in store warranty, return will be expiring... and the free one month use of email service, norton security and something else has been wasted. I have plans, once the dsl modem DOES work, to call all them and get another free month.

To add to my exasperation, the On Demand CABLE I ordered... well they finally came out and buried the cable TONIGHT... and no one told me they were coming, so I wasn't here to check it... yep, you guessed it: no on demand. Cable connection disconnected. Now I have to be here Sunday for repair. AND that means no movies for 3 days Finally online with DSL wonderful. I had to bow out of my mother's Red Hat meeting, for Sunday, and one of her friend's spouse died... and and and Finally online with DSL Life.

Sounds like fun :-) I have cable and we have a wireless network for inside the house as both my husband and I have desktops in the office upstairs and laptops for downstairs here. I have no clue, can reset the system if it dies but the "administrator" is my husband's desktop and we have slightly different versions of Windows so I can never find my way around his machine to the right controls.
