Alright so apparently people don't really give a damn about others not following rules, but whenever I mention something that might break the rules - I get mods all over me. Behavior in chat is still the same and no one gives a damn when people talk about sex sex sex all the time. Because those people are part of the """"""clique""""""". Alright, here's my feedback: Moderation in chat sucks. Go on, make excuses about how mods can't always be there and why do you not report and so on blah blah blah. Go on. You know it's right. I'm tired of maintaining this facade like I'm okay with crap like that going on in chat while I'm not and - guessing from the rules - neither are others. And even when mods and admins are in chat, they give me **** make fun of me. Get your **** in order. Or just stop faking like you give a **** one way or the other.

I know how you feel. I sometimes feel the same way in chat. As a chat host, I can only do so much, however, and am not always in there all the time. If you feel that chat might not be in your favor, there's always the option of not using it for a while. It works for me. Remember, we are all hurting in some way or another.

Dogey,
I'm gonna have to completely agree with you on this one. Firstly there simply aren't enough mods, and a lot of the ones who are mods, either don't spend enough time there or run when there's any type of conflict that doesn't involve their "clique" which leaves very very few good ones left. Things weren't perfect but chat had a much better decorum when mods could remove people from the room. Yesterday i witnessed transphobic hateful words from someone, and what? we have to grin and bear the BS to "report" them.... and MAYBE something will be done. There was no mod to mute them, or try and shut them up. So someone gets to be verbally abused because the instigator was upset about something that isn't even relevant to PC???? Something needs to be done, what the solution is... I really don't know. Sure we're all hurting, but it doesn't mean we have to make others hurt as well. I still haven't wrapped my head around talking about the suicide squad in comic books is a trigger...... but such is life i guess. |

I know Hollow, I know.
![]() What ideas do you have that can be instituted to make a better chatting experience? What would you think is a reasonable solution?

Unfortunately, we don't have enough volunteers who are willing to help out in chat. So we can't offer 24/7 coverage in chat, which is something we've always been up-front about.
As for chat reports, we treat them like any report about inappropriate member behavior. We investigate the report, discuss what action should be taken, and then take action regarding the member. Like anything that involves members, it takes time. And while I hear how frustrating that can be (since chat is real-time, and the abuse or concern happens in real-time), it is what is fair to members given we don't have 24/7 coverage in chat. There are two sides to every story, and so we always need to ensure we're seeing the whole picture in chat. We get chat reports lots of times that are very one-sided, leaving off what occurred just before the problem being reported. Sometimes that behavior that occurred resulted in the problem, so we have to investigate to ensure we understand exactly what went on. Many times, there are some PMs going on in chat where a moderator is trying to work with the member to stop the behavior before something more needs to be done (like kicking the member from chat). We have a set of guidelines for moderators in how to deal with chat behavior and escalate the issue if it can't be resolved privately. We generally don't just kick members without first trying to resolve the problem (privately). Members won't know about these behind-the-scenes efforts, because we're trying to de-escalate the situation. Without reports, of course, our hands are tied as well. So if we don't get a report about the behavior, then of course things won't change in chat. But to answer the OP's question, the community guidelines apply to all members while in chat, at all times. If you're aware of a problem in chat, please report it to any member of the community support team, the date and time the problem occurred, and the room in which it occurred. Thank you for your assistance in helping keep the chat rooms safe... While these seem like simple problems that should be dealt with easily, few chat issues are so black and white. DocJohn

I can volunteer, lol. I want to. Look, it's pretty damn obvious that when people break the rules and talk about sex while it isn't allowed, there's no two sides to it: it just happened, that's it. And it goes on, even when mods are there. It goes on and on and on. While I have been warned in PM to not mention a SONG, simply because it had the word "crack" in the title. Same with Suicide Squad, which is a damn comicbook. Got warned. And not only me. I can point a finger and say openly which mod did this but I won't. I don't care about mods PMing people and ask members to stop breaking the rules, it's not helpful, especially when it's several people doing it. It just isn't effective. Mods should step up and post IN THE CHAT when people start with they crap again. I seen this happen once (s/o Moogie). That's what needs to happen.

I'm not sure how you know that the members talking about explicitly sexual topics (that's what's not allowed, passing mentions of sex are still okay) aren't also being PMed, as you were when you apparently violated the community guidelines? (Chances are, warnings have been issued to such members... so if they continue, you should say something to another mod or community support team member so we have it on the record.)
I agree, it would be nice if everyone knew what exactly a topic is about... But I don't know how we would expect everyone to have our same knowledge about comic books or songs before-the-fact. And then to know, for instance, that the "Suicide Squad" isn't a comic book series about suicide. There's a lot of assumptions you're making about other people's knowledge and background... So yes, the mods will make mistakes in chat too -- we're all human. But that's a far cry from saying nothing is being done about these issues. We do a lot of work behind the scenes and we happily do it in service of keeping the community a safe and enjoyable place to be with others. Could we do better? Absolutely, and that's why we have this feedback forum to understand the challenges faced by our members and how we can do better. I get it... you're in chat, you see something obviously against the community guidelines, and you want immediate action taken. Unfortunately, we just don't move that quickly without giving people a chance to rectify their behavior first. We believe in giving people second chances. (But yeah, if the same member(s) are doing the same thing against community guidelines over and over again, please, let us know.) Thank you, DocJohn

I was in chat the other day and noticed that too. It bothered me so much I decided I will only be using chat for the discussion topics. As a sexual abuse survivor all the talk about sex does not make it a safe place for me.

I would offer my services as a round the clock Chat Mod, but not only would that be daunting for any one person to do, I just don't know if I'm mentally healthy enough to be a mod. If DocJohn thinks I am okay for the job, then so be it, but otherwise, I can only do so much as a chat host.

I think Hollow was replying to me.
My point wasn't about that individual, single instance of someone being warned about something, but the fact that not everyone has the same level of knowledge about things. Sometimes a person might just focus on a keyword, without understanding its larger context, and I agree, they should work to better understand something before warning others about it. I will talk to the mod about that instance. If you want to apply to become a chat moderator, please PM me directly. Members who've been involved in any sort of chat incident in the past 6 months are generally disqualified from becoming a moderator. Thanks!

Don't let idiots be chat mods
![]() I don't think an ideal quality for a chat moderator is to be emotionally volatile and/or possibly whiney. I can't think of a better way to ruin chat. It would be like putting a far leftist or rightist in charge of a bunch of radicals that are already all worked up and ready to pounce. How about we add a report abuse function directly into the chat system and assign someone the job of sifting through the submissions and coming up with their own system of disciplining people? (Discipline could be warning or banning or kicking or anything....up to the discretion of the person put charge and obviously following a few basic guidelines) And, artchic, if you were to be considered for a future mod position in chat, there would need to be a book 5 inches thick to teach you how to moderate in an acceptable way. Along with that book, there would need to be a test over the books entirety given to you in order to be absolutely certain that each situation is able to be best handled. The requirements being that only those who receive a 95% or above are able to be moderators. Some people are obvious candidates but others need to be tested. ![]() |

We're looking into the incident yesterday in chat.
In order to become a chat moderator, you need to be a member in good standing with us, with no recent history (6 months) of any chat problems or reports. We're also looking for members well-known to us (e.g., have numerous posts in the community), and are well-regarded by other members. Again, if you're interested in helping out in chat, you're welcomed to PM me for further information and consideration. Thanks!
