What happens when you try? Are you getting a box with an "x" in it, or is the code showing up instead of the picture?

Post an example here... first post an image here the way you are trying it, and then post the line of markup code following it, but add spaces before and after the "[" and "]" so we can read the code you are typing into the post.

We can troubleshoot this.

There you go...

Your instinct was correct, there is no markup code for "cry" here.

When you are composing a reply, in the line above the entry boxes you will see "...you may use markup in your posts" If you click on the link there, a box will pop up with that shows a list of all the markup commands available. There is [ frown ] (What am I doing wrong?) and 9 others, ten in all. There are other codes for styling text bold or italic and including images or quoting text.

If you see "crying" icons here people are linking to those images from other websites.

You can also use true HTML on this board for more formating choices if you know how to make web pages.

Hope this helps... give it a try...

Thanks for your help. Why isn't there an icon for 'crying'? In fact, why can't the icons in 'markup' be the same as the ones in chat?

I think I'd better stick to what is available here. I'm too retarded to link to other sites to get other pictures.

You are not retarded, SS. Everything takes time esp. this stuff. It took me forever to figure things out and I'm still learning.

What am I doing wrong? and I just typed [ smile ] without the spaces.

The chat is different software than the software for the forum itself. The chat software package includes all those icons.

I questioned myself why there are so many violent icons available in chat (like the ax and I think there is even a gun) and docjohn explained they are just part of the chat software and can't really be changed easily.

It may be easy to add icons to the forum markup, depends on the software, but I know at a different site there were all sorts of custom icons available. That was different software than DocJohn is using though so doesn't necessarily mean it is something he can do here, but couldn't hurt to ask.

If he can add custom icons he would then need a suitable graphic for "crying" which wouldn't be hard, but if it didn't match the size and style of the other icons so it doesn't drive the OCD people here crazy (seriously, it would bug me if there was one icon that didn't match all the others... but I'd get over it if an icon could be added. I'm not Monk What am I doing wrong?.

BTW I stick to the easy markup icons in my messages (I do link to a graphic for my sig, but I hardly ever, if ever, add linked icons to my messages if you notice. And I am certainly not retarded What am I doing wrong?.

Nothing wrong with keeping it sweet and simple. If at some point you want to try linking to a graphic we can help.

I did finally figure out how to edit the icons and get it to work properly in the chat room, so a few of the more obnoxious ones are gone....
