in one of doc johns posts he stated....
Just a reminder, too -- you don't have to be a member to read posts here (except for protected forums, like the Premier Poohbah forum, which is a membership benefit to those who reach certain community milestones or donate to our non-profit organization). Anyone can read anything they want. However, member profiles are restricted to only be accessible to logged-in members. and then moxie stated further along inviting another member to make a psychotherapy thread in the poombah forum.... now Im not a member of the poohbah forums so I may be wrong here but question... the poohbah isnt protected as in other members not being able to take what they read to other places on the internet correct? reason I bring this up is because the whole reason for this thread is because a person who was a member here took posts from psych central and quoted it in their website.... I just dont want others to assume just because its password protected that this cant happen there too. Im guessing at all of this but couldnt members of the poohbah do the same thing (right click copy and paste what they see in the poohbah and take it to other locations outside the internet) and no one is the wiser .....until ....someone from psych central happens onto that website and recognizes the quoted material and discovers the person who did that was or is a member here at psych central... which means this same situaiton can in fact happen on the poohbah forum where people outside psych cental are viewing poohbah members posts by way of another website of a member who had or has access to poohbah.... am it talking in circles here lol you know what I mean. I dont want to join the poohbah forum thinking it is this all mighty protected forum and then find out that its just like the regular boards where a member or ex member who had access to the poohbah board can do what happened the resulted in this thread and discussion. Im not saying this to be mean moxie but even if the poohbah board is password protected it may still mean that posts can be taken to other places on the internet and be read by all kind of people we many not want them read by....it might be best to even though a password is needed for the poohbah forums to keep in mind to be careful of what you want to post. if my guessing is right the same thing can happen on the poohbah boards just that in order for it to happen someone has to be logged in. you still may not know who is actually reading your posts. please be careful. |

That's ok growlycat. When I did that search and ended up coming across a thread from this site, as I mentioned I got triggered. Then, after I mulled it over a bit I thought, ok well, what if someone is doing a search and finds that thread very helpful? I don't think that coming to that conclusion was being passive.

Yes one has to pick and choose battles. Taking advantage of vulnerable people in a mental health forum does qualify for me personally as something worth fighting against. Everyone has their own litmus test. |

And LOTS of people ask permission to use content. You have no idea how many cease and desist letters go out daily or how many lawsuits are filed daily about this issue. As an artist, I deal with this all the time. Typically it's from someone who just didn't realize they need to give credit or can't take an image without a royalty, and they fix it when they learn they made a mistake. There are actually laws that cover social media, screenshots, content on the internet. Just because you break them, doesn't mean it's okay or that someday someone won't contact you and tell you you have to take down their photo. So, no, it's actually not "just how things are." People who do this are breaking laws and stealing. It's theft, and they are often dealt with. But like with anything else, there are many people who get away with it. Still doesn't make it right. Remember when everyone was file sharing music illegally? Don't see that as much now, do we? Do you also steal film content? Artists and creative individuals deserve the right to their intellectual property and to be paid. Just because others are doing it does not mean you or another doing it is not wrong. It's still wrong. People who are affected by this can choose whether or not they want to pursue it, and if they do, they are within their rights. And we shouldn't make them feel bad if they choose to. No one should be made to feel bad for exercising their rights. Seesaw

Did I say that nobody should stand up for their intellectual property? Did I say that I don't think it's wrong? Did I say there are no laws against it? Did I say nobody has the right to pursue it if they choose to? Did I say anyone should feel bad for exercising their rights? Did I say or imply ANY of the things you have said?NO.That's just what you twisted my words into. My post has obviously touched a nerve. People are gonna steal content whether it's illegal to do so or not. That's what I meant by saying that's just how it is.It's interesting that you turned my post completely into something it's not. |

And yes, it did touch a nerve, because you acted like nothing could be done about it "that's just the way it is." Which implies nothing can or should be done. I'm not sure what you mean by touched a nerve, other than it provoked a response. Every thread here touches a nerve, and provokes a response. But that's fine, you are also allowed your interpretation.

Well this incident has definitely been an a learning experience and I just wont be posting much. Perhaps some simple replies but not in depth experiences I have had. I fear giving my identity away from describing a personal experience.

If this latest incident has caused people to think about their privacy online that is a good outcome in my view. I'm not so much worried about the random person out their but rather someone who knows I have a mental illness deliberately looking for posts on a bipolar forum.
For instance, let's say you got involved with a new person who told you they had a mental illness and what their diagnosis was. A lot of people go on facebook to find out more about their new (and old) friends but if this person had nothing on facebook, or you didn't use facebook, wouldn't you be tempted to look them up on forums. Let's say further, that the person said they posted online on forums. Some people have a lot of free time on their hands.

I am fairly new to this site, and have posted some very personal things on here. I am not sure at this minute realizing that people from the outside can read my life. I am not comfortable with the thought, but I have been thinking about it as I read these posts, and what I have put on here, if it might help some other young people from going through what I have gone through my 52 years, and ending up having the life that I have, then my own feelings are that it could turn out good for some young people. My life has been so messed up because of my childhood, but if young people read my posts they may go to the child services and be able to get the help they will need, instead of living there whole life thinking, this is the way life goes. I am sending my Thoughts, and Many Hugs to everyone on this post, and everyone suffering!!!!!!!

I agree katydid, if anything I share can be helpful to someone else, can improve their understanding and bring them comfort in anyway as well as help someone better understand the way I am challenged and how to better understand the overall challenge so they can be more supportive be it a therapist or friend or family member of someone struggling then it's a positive.

Plagiarism is the "wrongful appropriation" and "stealing and publication" of another author's "language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions" and the representation of them as one's own original work. Wikipedia.
I no longer post images of my artwork here, nor on any other site. About a year ago I chanced upon an online advertisement featuring a product logo that was a direct copy of my work. Fortunately the logo was removed after I contacted the company, compelling them to cease & desist from using the image. I was lucky....However, proving Intellectual property ownership can become very murky & expensive. Protect yourself by keeping concise records of everything you post online....I know I do.

Once you post on the internet, it is forever out there. Plagiarism is rampant. Yes there are laws but proving it can be hard.

Taking someone’s struggles off of a mental health website then making a judgemental blog about it is the lowest of the low. What kind of person does that? It’s not just about plagerizing it is about exploiting vulnerable people for ones own gain. Armen is a creep

I've read so many posts. I had to go back to the OP. I usually don't comment much but I can see where the worry is coming from. This is a website dedicated to those, myself included, with many different types of mental illness in it's many shapes and forms. The internet can be an amazing place to find, meet, learn etc ,that was never deemed possible before but it also comes with a growing trend of abusers! So, as knowledge , sharing, and what was never thought possible 10 yrs ago. I now see that is is also becoming more dangerous to just open up. This is a perfect case in point and it sucks. I have to say in this day and age of communication. If your doing it through any internet social channels. You have to protect yourself very carefully and I find it sad. That there are those who wish to do harm. It does get worse almost daily. These are people with no ethics, morality, or care for another because they can get away with it! Where's the future? I should also add, to please not give in to the few bad apples. Trust me, they will be overcome by our diligence!

It was one of my posts that was stolen and didn't know it would blow up so much on here. I just wanted to post as a warning to make sure you keep yourselves safe and anonymous when posting online. It has made me wary of posting stuff on here now. I still think it's a fantastic resource and it's good to know we have some protection at least on here in that if things do get stolen we can ask the person to take them down
