@stopdog i think its so one can respond to anothers post and let them know, but without having to unnecessarily copy their whole post into ones post? Which to me seems it would waste space. And is a pain in the arse to delete - sometimes you end up deleting the users name.

For me, it seems like a fun tool to let the friends I have here know that I posted something and want them to see it, or am specifically requesting their support.

However I'm not exactly sure how much I'll actually use it. (Future KnitChick may be too shy to use it, or she may utilize it daily, especially if it catches on. need a time machine!)

Not at all! This was just my idea of how to use it!

Plus i like how it gives you a record of requests for help, as you say.

I did notice, that when I tagged myself, nothing happened. No notification. @downandlonely did you experience that too?

Okay - thanks.
I don't get it but okay. I wish I could turn it off.

Right, when I tagged myself nothing happened. That's ok though. I don't really need to be notified if I tag myself, lol.

Oh wow! That’s cool! That’s what it was! Someone thanked me for something on their thread and it tagged me to their thread. I wasn’t sure how it worked that way but now I see and it’s awesome!

Yeah, I don't think anything happens when you try and tag yourself.

It's a nice feature. However, not all usernames are easy to remember. It would be helpful if some kind of suggestions pop up when typing @ and few letters I noticed this works on Tag User option at the top of the thread, but not in posts.

honestly I think if this is a thing that's going to stay around, users should have a choice if they want to take part in the tags/mentions

I personally don't like it, because I think it's more a facebook thing than a forum thing (and it takes away a bit of the forum atmosphere)

but I guess if I had a choice to disable it if I wanted it, I could live with that

what really annoys me is the fact that the mentions/ tags are in the actual threads
Thanks for this!

Lol. But I wish! I just didn't understand why people we're tagging themselves but I see now they were trying to just try out the function.

here is something else I've just thought of:

isn't this tagging feature essentially the same as quoting that person's post?

why would you want to tag someone in a post that they may never even read, when you can just reply quoting their message which will alert them to it anyway

I'm not even sure if you get emailed when you get tagged like in FB
Thanks for this!

@raging vortex this is why: 1. You dont have to quote the post (which bugs me, i have to hit backspace for forever on my phone just to get to their name, then i usually overrun it and cant get it back). 2. Now you have a notice and record of it. 3. The email notification should have been turned off by now, unless you ask for it on your edit options.

You can pm me if you want to discuss, i think i have it figured out!

Eta - ooh, your name does NOT have an underline in it, sorry @raging that post was meant for @raging vortex

choosing what to quote is a feature that is useful to the next post without having to backspace, I agree. A record for yourself can be nice, as well as a notification sent to the person the comment is directed. no need for an e-mail notification unless you eat. breath. sleep Psych Central, which I am sure none of us do, but also a nice feature
Thanks for this!

Is there a way to turn off notifications of being tagged? I really don't want to be notified this way. I'm not seeing that option. I have my PM turned off for a reason, and when someone tags me, it bypasses the option and I get a notification. I'd rather not receive any kind of notifications whatsoever.

I have my options set this way. I still received notification in my messaging even though I have my PM also turned off.

You mean, the little number at the top right under your name, "your notifications"?

Or does it stop your screen or notify you in other ways?

Yup. It looks like I’m getting a message (which I shouldn’t be getting because I’ve turned off messaging). If I wanted any kind of notifications, I would have enabled those features. I didn’t, but apparently I have no say about this kind. Probably something that just needs some reprogramming which is why I brought it up.
Thanks for this!

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
