so i just bought a new laptop. its an HP pavilion entertainment PC with windows vista already on it. don't really like the vista so far but whatever.

well anyways, a couple days ago i noticed that every time i shut my laptop (not off, just put the screen down), windows restarts. then when i open it up, i have to sign in all over again and it tells me that windows is recovering from an unexpected shutdown. well i check for solutions but it can't find any.

my boyfriend bought the same exact laptop and his hasn't done this. i havent uninstalled anything except for windows office, sling player and vongo... all crap that im never going to use. anything that I don't know what it's for I leave on here. has anyone else had this happen with their vista? is this a common problem?

I am not a computer whiz and don't know anything about Vista, lol, but in Windows XP that sounds like it could be in hibernation mode.

Start
Control Panel
Power Options

There's a few things there like Stand By and Shut Down options. You might want to look there?

Hmm...maybe the power settings?

Right-click on the desktop screen (when you just have icons up, no programs). Click on Properties. Click on the Screensaver tab, then on the bottom there should be a little box that says "Power" or "Power Settings" or something like that.

See what your settings are. There might be something that says when you close the screen, it shuts it off. Change that.

And....I agree on disliking Windows Vista. I hate Vista. They call this an upgrade??!! Whatever. Give me XP back any day.

yeah the thing with vista is that its like they made the wrong stuff easier while keeping all the bad stuff. its kind of annoying. its like they made it for completely computer iliterate people which most people arent that bad but whatever...

ill try the power settings

Hmm....and you bought it brand new? Where?

You could call HP customer service, or the customer service for the store you bought it at (like Staples, if you bought it there...)

Could be a hardware glitch.

Is it plugged in? Is the battery charged?

best buy. we had a week to return it but of course this happens right after weve had it a week. their geek squad is really expensive. its plugged in with a full battery.

i want to ask my step-dad but the only problem is that they dont know i got a new one. they bought me one for graduation a few years ago but its been through roommates, cats, dogs etc... and craps out on me constantly. my step-dad is always fixing it. i dont know if they will be mad that i bought a new one.

Would you try putting it on standby before shutting it?
...I actually don't know how Vista works, but I assume you can do this?

i chatted online with a technician and he said to unplug the ac adapter, take out the battery, hold the power button for 30 seconds to 1 minute, put the battery back in, plug in the ac adapter, turn on my laptop.

it worked. didnt shut off this time. dont know what that did but it worked question for computer nerds lol
