I think it is the number of people that have added you as a friend over the years!

If its the one I am thinking it is, it is when you send someone a PM and you add their name to your address book...

AND, Z, you have a lot of friends!

Zorah Darling,
Just click on someone's name and then click "Add To Friend's List. Don't get your frilly panties in a twist over this, ok? I never think to add people to my list. There really is no point to it, at least for me. On Personal Profile page... On Personal Profile page...

I think it is the different number of people who have PM'd you and you have replied to (or whom you have PM'd first); presumbly you wouldn't PM enemies, LOL :-)

No, it can't be that unless it's time-valued... that number would be several thousand.... good guess though On Personal Profile page...

Mmm... we could try a little experiment. If I'm on your list of friends (or not), try taking me off your list of friends (or add) and then I could let you know whether my number goes up or down. Then that will tell us how the system works maybe.

Yep! Now I have one extra friend! On Personal Profile page... On Personal Profile page...

So I was correct in thinking it is to do with other people adding you as a friend. On Personal Profile page...

Just to be clear...

"Friend's List = Address Book"

We use the terms interchangeably here.

The "Friends" number is the number of members who've added you to their address book/friend's list. I'll see if there isn't an easy way to display this list to members....

The avatars that you see on your home profile page are friends that you have added to your address book, but they will only be the members that are visible online. Invisible members avatars do not show up.

BTW You can add someone to your Friends list by clicking on their name (like in a forum or the who's online list) and then clicking ADD to Friends ... then their avatar will show up on that profile listing, when they are online. On Personal Profile page...

The reason this is a little confusing is because the forum software's idea of "friends" is not the typical social networking definition.

On a site like Myspace or Facebook, you typically need to agree to be on someone else's "friends list." So there's only one list of people who you've approved as your "Friends" (because its public information).

Here, none of this is public information -- nobody can see your address book except you and nobody knows who has added you to their address book.

So there's two lists we all have:

1. People we've friended (our address book)
2. People who've friended us (their address book)

The listing shown on the profile page with photos of your "friends online" are people *you* have friended (e.g., members of your address book) online at the moment. There is currently no way of seeing the list of people who've added you to their address book... and the more I think about this, I think that's the way it should be. It could cause unwanted/unnecessary hurt if people saw who it was who added them to their address book (and those who didn't).

On another site where there's a public profile page and the people you have chosen to add as friends are there, person X was asking for person Y; person Z had added person Y to their own (Z's) page as a friend but person Y didn't want to be on that person's page On Personal Profile page... X was asking was there anyway Y could block Z from having Y as their friend. So it can get really complicated and ugly it looks like if we can see who wants us (and who doesn't).

I've had many members here ask if it was okay to add me to their friends list here. On Personal Profile page...

I wouldn't want anyone else to read my lists, as they wouldn't get a complete picture. Sometimes I just clear everything out and take my time adding back.. too much overwhelming my senses requires I clear stuff out.

On Personal Profile page...
