So far I can't get into the chats, I get as far as the java chat window loading but then it says can't connect you may be behind a firewall etc.
My firewall is new to me and I don't know how to check it's relavent status or safely change it. Anyone know Norton firewall settings? If it's something else instead I haven't even that much clue.

Thanks in advance~D

ps-how do I turn off flashing avatars and flashing emocions?

Hey down

What does it actually say when you can't get into chat?

I know that when I use the library computers, I can't get into chat because it says it's blocked on port 8080; that's the usual port for IMing and obviously the library ppl have set their firewall to block it. A firewall will continue to block until it's allowed; and then (for Norton) even after it's been allowed; I've had that problem with Norton's firewall. Unfortunately I can't remember how to allow port 80. There is somewhere a list of exceptions where you can allow certain ports and decide the traffic too (incoming/ outgoing): maybe that would work? You could also try adding Psych Central to a list of 'safe' sites and see if that makes a difference.

I got in once, and it was so nice to be able to have some social interaction for a change, as I've been quite isolated.

I have no idea how I got in once and can't seem to get back in. The message that comes up in the box where the chat starts to load say:

Could not connect to chat.psychcentral.com:8080.
Possible reasons include:
- The chat server system at chat.psychcentral.com is temporarily unavailable.
- Your computer is behind a firewall or proxy server. Please ensure that your firewall permits outgoing TCP connections to chat.psychcentral.com on port 8080.

There may be a java problem as well or related to it, idk, this is my first computer and apparently there are a number of problems. (I think it must have been made by Dilbert's company and sold well before it was really ready for use :-/ grrrrrrrrr) I'm intimidated and reluctant to instal java updates that might be the wrong choice of many options and create internal conflicts. I guess I'll come up with a written plan to solve the numerous problems over time and start working on them in what seems a logical order. This will of course probably take me a couple of years oh well I'll work on it as I can.
thanks for the suggestions of what might help.

if chat port 8080 is blocked by a firewall, you will have to tell norton to keep 8080 open while you are chatting--that it is not an attack.
i am sure norton has a help file on your machine that can guide you through this.
the kitchen sink alternative is to disable norton while you chat, but there's inherent dangers in that.
