I was wondering how frequently some of you saw a therapist or psychologist, etc. in the initial stages of treatment? I have been dx since age 21 w/CPTSD, but avoided treatment b/c(foolishly) I thought I could get out of ever having to discuss the trauma w/anyone or address it at all and my meds would just do the trick...I am now 36, 're-activated', and hanging on by a thread. I sought help, and have had scheduled therapy sessions twice in the last 3months since I found a psychologist. My appointments have been cancelled twice due to the Doctor having personal issues, but it seems like it's going to be a monthly thing...I hate to sound so needy, but it seems like a long time and not very efficient...? Sorry for the long post-I have been trying to get the courage to actually post it for a long while-I appreciate your patience

I usually have weekly appointments. If things get very difficult for me and there is room in my T's schedule, she offers a second appointment. I know that's a lot but I really appreciate it. It has been extremely helpful.

Right now I see once a week for "solo" and a weekly group. I just started the group it's a trauma based group.
In the past 12 months I've seen my previous therapist (I moved and had to change) 2 and sometimes 3 times a week depending on my needs. My current therapist asked if I wanted to do 2 x a week but I said I'd prefer to let him judge that. So far I haven't needed it but I know it's an option. I know someone who sees a therapist 3x week and has for at least 2 years. For several months they saw their therapist 5x a week. |

When I first started having flashbacks and was out of control I went 3x a week and sometimes had crisis appointments (I was also diagnosed Bipolar rapid Cycling during this time as well). After about a year (was hospitalized 2x during this period) I started seeing her 2x a week. Just about 3 months ago I started her seeing her 1x a week, but have moved to 2x a week every other week because we are doing some hard trauma work now that I am stable to do that...Sounds confusing, but I hope that helps...

I am going thru a breakup and I wish I could go to therapy every day but I only go once a week. When it first happened a few weeks ago I was a mess and went to some additional sessions at a place called crisis care in my city.

Well when flashbacks and nightmares occur it's crucial that I'm seen by psychologist once a week and call in when I need a crisis session, but I guess it all depends on the doctor and patient availability

I am 45 years old, and had a traumatic childhood filled with sexual abuse. At age 13, I began having Holocaust nightmares. Try as I might to get the nightmares to stop, no amount of therapy, depression drugs, hospital stays or therapists could help.
By the age of 42, I had become the Professor of Graphic Design and a Holocaust Educator. All of my faculty art exhibitions are my creative expression about my nightmares. I even created a commercial for Holocaust Ed in 2014 using new digital film apps, and my artwork. Have you ever considered finding a therapist who has the same spiritual beliefs as you do? Whether you be Christian, Jewish, Lutheran, Catholic, etc. For me, this was the key. Someone from the Jewish community reached out to me in 2013 after reading one of my blogs, and my rampant anger about how no therapist had ever been successful in ever helping me get control of my nightmares. They asked if I had ever considered talking to a Rabbi, who was also a licensed psycho therapist. I was willing to give it a try. Within 6 months, he was able to get the nightmares to stop. He also was able to correctly diagnose me with Complex PTSD. I am currently writing to you from Israel. I'm on sabbatical this year as a Professor. I decided to pick up a Master's in Holocaust Education in the Holy Land. My therapist? ...In time, he also became my Rabbi. I spent 2 years in therapy with him before getting on a plane and flying halfway across the world to the Holy Land to get the MA in Holocaust Ed. His private practice is in Tsfat, Israel--1 of the 4 holy cities. After a month of attending the university here, I hopped on a bus and took it to Tsfat to spend the Shabbat weekend with my Rabbi and his family. When he picked me up from the bus station--it was the very first time we were to physically meet. The first words he said to me were: "God has brought you here." Perhaps it is the same for you?...God has brought you here, to find answers to your questions. The key element that was missing from all my therapy sessions?...The spiritual component. And, fully knowing that someone truly cared about me, wanted to really help me, and wasn't focused on just taking my money and listening to me talk for an hour. Your anxiety will end...when you find the therapist that you are searching for. If you are spiritual at all...perhaps try looking for one that has the same spiritual/ religious view that you have. p.s. I talk to my Rabbi 5 days out of the week. I very rarely have 1 to 1 sit-down therapy sessions with him. He does texting therapy. His practice revolves around international clients. I have found, for me personally--I would rather talk and text to him about my issues little by little...vs being forced to sit down and try to get everything out in 60 minutes once per week. He uses TALK SPACE for therapy chats. |

Wow, that once a month thing sounds so infrequent! I have huge trust issues, and I find it difficult to keep any trust built up if it's longer than a week between appointments.
At times of crisis, i've gone in as often as twice a day (but that was really rare and usually ended with the second session being a conversation about taking myself to the ER). Depending on what i'm dealing with, I can see the every day (assuming she can convince insurance). Usually though, it's 1x a week plus group. She recently returned from a month-long vacation though, and I only saw an interim for the first two weeks she was away... |
