Sometimes, noise goes right through me.
How severely it affects me may depend upon my status at the time.

I generally get very triggered/ irritated by doors slamming shut and similar noises.

I am very affected right now because someone in the house has been repeatedly slamming something (on another floor of the house). I feel like I am losing my mind! I need to take klonopin and isolate for awhile. I am shaken through and through.

I have difficulties with white noise, too. When I am triggered, white noise is too loud and gives me auditory illusions. For example, a fan might sound like rock music, talk radio, etc.

Do you get triggered by certain types of noise?

There's something about a vacuum for me, unless I'm the one using it (even then I become hypervigilant). Banging and slamming also mess with me, too. There are others too, but out of all of the noises this world can make, it's the sound of twigs snapping underneath a boot that can completely send me over the edge.

Silence is worse a lot of the time. There's something about it that makes me convinced something's about to happen. So, I play music a lot, nearly constantly. A fan can make me hear different things, too, but I'm nearly always "hearing" something and have just gotten used to it.

When I'm shaken up, I go to something newish around the house, usually no more than a year old, and I just stare at it. While I'm looking, I remember how it got there and why it had to happen. Seeing something modern keeps me grounded and lets me know that it isn't the past anymore. I'm here and I'm "safe". Never truly feel safe, but hey, I get what I can.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this. Anything you do to keep you grounded and present?

Thank you for your kind and thoughtful response.

I am sorry you deal with this, too.

I think I am quite grounded. I'll have to give this some thought.

I feel for you.
I hate loud sounds, too. Especially traffic and crowds. However, the worst trigger for me is a group of teenagers laughing. That's a result of years of bullying. Everytime I pass a group of loud teens in the street I think they're laughing at me.

Noise is especially hard for me at the moment. I am in a full blown Fibromyalgia Flare today and everything is so loud. My grandsons noises (autism) are driving me crazy today, I have to be patient with him. he's 4 and can't help it. I seriously need some quiet/ alone time it isn't going to happen though.

People yelling or being very loud trigger me, trucks driving down our street in the middle of the night trigger me. I could go on and on. I feel you about needing a Klonopin, I need to take a Xanax can't though until my GS goes down for his nap.

Sometimes I get really sensitive to noise. It's like any noise scares me. I get really jumpy at almost any sound. This only happens once in a while.

I can relate. What bothers me the most is when I'm in my room and I hear other people talking on the phone, or being loud. I get very anxious when I feel like the TV is too loud. I'm always aaking the people I live with to "lower the volume bc it's too loud" but they say it's me and that they can't hear a thing if the volume is lower.
Also, sometimes I enter this mode where I get hypervigilant and I feel like paralized. I feel physically and emotionally overwhelmed and like I'm about to explode, but I can not talk or move or do anything to relax

Slamming and clanking noises bother me a lot. I dropped a knife on a plate once and nearly jumped out of my skin. I also usually put the dishes away so all that noise is horrible.

I can't have the TV on when I sleep because I get hyper-vigilant. TVs always distract me.

Loud people also are bothersome.

Hi Wild Coyote,

You said:

Do you get triggered by certain types of noise?"

Thank you so much for talking about that. It's hard to find people that know about the white noise part of dissociation. It seems to get like that angry/scared. Noises sound like different things to me all the time too, I always thought it was the weed. I've had nicknames like "sky pilot", spacing out all the time. Dissociating, apparently.

Abuser empathy warning?
Dissociation might be what accidentally(???) causes the abuse, getting so spaced that you wake up reenacting the abuse with someone

"Stranger Ones" Netflix movie, it's about sexual abuse, I mean to say that it's not some stupid movie where the authors mindlessly write in some craziness, and not address it. I found it helpful, and there's no abuse shown, although it's obvious the kid is spaced out (I'm so sorry)
The movie is ambiguous in places and I found that helpful in figuring it out. But it shows how this **** can happen, mind blowing.

I watched it 3 days ago and can't stop thinking about it, my abuse is still hidden from me

When my PTSD gets activated it feels like everything is louder. The television, the radio are all screaming at me unless they are on really low.

I usually turn everything off that makes any noise, and wear headphones without sound

I had never thought that this was part of my ptsd. I just figured I was anxious to begin with or something and the noises just bothered me but I see now I'm not the only one. My husbands voice bothers me sometimes when hes being loud. Tv being up to loud bothers me. People yelling even if its not at me.
