This is my first real forum post, I don't really know who else to talk about this with. I'm not sure most people will understand so I'm giving the forum a shot. I grew up in an isolated, open area consisting of woods and farmland. I feel a very spiritual connection with this particular land and nature. A connection I don't feel with many other locations. I love that It's isolated, open, I have so many warm memories growing up in this area and in the small, nearby town.
I no longer live there and I often find myself wanting to return. I find the land and people in this area so inspiring and beautiful, but not many else do. Many people who are from this place don't see it the way I do. They say it's boring, dirty, lame, etc. This makes me feel extremely frustrated that they don't see the beauty in this land that I do. I almost feel crazy for being the only one who actually feels a connection to the area. It's my home and I take it as a personal blow when someone insults it. When they say that this place 'sucks' I feel as if they're saying that I 'suck' too. I take it really personally to the point I get angry. I truly love my home town and am proud to be from there, but I feel like I'm the only one. I'm sorry this was kind of lengthy, I'm not good with talking about my feelings. However, this has been bugging me a lot the past couple of days and I'm not sure where else to turn. I just wish people could see this great land through my eyes and learn to love it the way I did. Am I being too over sensitive? Am I the only one who feels this way about a place? I really feel kind of crazy for being so emotionally attached to a location but I've been feeling really troubled. I thank you in advance for any advice, feedback. Thank you for letting me vent! I really want to let this go ![]() |

Hello, LostInParadise92, and welcome to Psych Central! I think your friends are trying to break free of their ties, so they can go out and spread their wings. My yound adult sons don't want to live where we live and where they spent a good part of their lives. They think it's "boring."
Yet, there are plenty folks who grew up here and love it--and want to spend their whole lives here. Sometimes I wish I could go back and live in the house where I spent my whole life until I went off to college. It was a farm, miles away from a nearby town, so I know what you mean. Either way is okay. I know it's frustrating to hear of folks who put down where you live, but that's just their current opinion. Who knows, maybe some of them will even return to the area at some point. ![]() ![]() |

I live in the woods, in a place where there is a ton of farmland, next to a nearby small town.. too!
![]() I definitely appreciate my small town. I love it here. I completely and totally understand what you're saying. I never feel home anywhere else. When people talk about hating this place, it makes me a little sad. Why hate it? It's quiet and peaceful and small and nice. They just don't appreciate it. When I'm older, I want to move to a big city, though. I probably would feel offended if I was in a big city and people made fun of small towns. They're the best places out there. ![]()

Are there things you can do to distract your associated emotions from these creeping thoughts? This post reminds me a lot of how I also cling onto things people say or how they act and how I let it hurt me and damage me. - But it all seems relevant right? ![]() |

Hello LostInParadise92. I feel the same about places I grew up. I could sit on top of a grassy hill and watch the land for a long time, feeling peaceful. I think it's sort of the feeling of being part of something bigger than yourself. Plus, I notice a lot of people in towns often think their town stinks and others are better.

Hello, LostInParadise92. Perhaps, your perceptions need a bit of reorientation?

We can only see as much beauty as there is inside
us,so appreciate self. No point in discussing with others,or being angry with them--they have no idea what you are on about . . .instead, look on self as very fortunate, but largely keep it to self. I LOVE looking at trees backlit by the sun, simply wonderful, but I would not mention to anyone unless I knew them to be so inclined. Kind Regards, BLUEDOVE |
