Anyone else do this? My bf tries to deter me from doing this, but I can't help it. Especially when I'm under a lot of stress or upset about something, I'll frequently say stuff like, "God I'm an idiot," and things of that nature. Basically bullying myself/being too hard on myself. It's a really bad habit I can't seem to shake, going on over ten years now. . .

This may be what's called "Auditory Imprints".
When we are very young, anything said to us by parents or carers gets lodged in a very receptive childs mind. This acts as a post-hypnotic-suggestion and it plays back to us as we get older. I just caught self at a new one the other day,so I'm working on eradicating that one. The trick is,AWARENESS. Try to get into habit of catching 'whispers' of self condemnation before they come out your mouth. When you do catch them, immediately go where you can be alone, sit down, close eyes, and have COMPASSIONATE chat with little girl you once were, telling her this is NOT TRUE,that she was GIVEN these toxic messages without her knowing, and that you/she are most certainly NOT an idiot, or any other pejorative name. It is important that you be alone for this,to really reach part that is toxic to you. Deepest Respect, BLUEDOVE |

You should be your own best friend. Try more positive talking to and about yourself. Old habits die hard but it can be done.

Yeah I definitely do a lot of that to myself. I've taken the habit of then arguing with myself over it... (I took the stance of viewing my issues as being ME vs MY BRAIN... and have attributed all the hateful thoughts to being my brain's fault...).
A friend of mine said this to me the other day, when I called my thoughts stupid. He said "you're not stupid. you're just wrong." Which I was. My thoughts were super negative about myself and was predicting disaster... and I knew it, but then thought I was stupid for having those thoughts. So... a double-negative going on there I suppose.

I do it daily too. It's like I can't forgive myself for every little thing
I've done wrong in my past. I work on it but it continually pops back up. I feel like a failure to my family. ![]()
