I am working on becoming sober doing MRT DPD and going to A.A. I have been going through a really rough emotional time, witch before I started my road to sobriety I would drink and do drugs to numb the pain.
How have any of you sober individuals deal with your emotions sober? ![]()

Hi,
Congrats on working to get sober. For me, it has been more than worth it to actually learn how to live life. Coping with emotions and the mountains of anxiety was very hard in early sobriety. Just take teeny tiny lil baby steps and be patient. Work close with your professional care team AND do the AA meetings - get real about it - work steps, get a sponsor, etc. Hang in there! PM me if you need to. I just hit the 3 year completely clean and sober mark last week. moogs

Aloha adj, the way it was explained to me when I first got sober... its like you have fallen down and skinned your knee, the skin hurts and is raw for awhile until it can heal and grow some new skin to protect it. Our brains work that way as well when we have consumed substances that kinda numb it. When it starts waking up the sparks fly. Its really a good place to be knowing that the brain is waking back up although its not fun to go through at the time. Be patient with yourself and know it does get better with time (and work.) I had a bad alcohol and IV drug problem but somehow have made it 34-years without needing to self-medicate with that stuff. Best wishes, hang in there!

I detoxed when I went inpatient for my MI and its a very relieving feeling not to have that holding on to me anymore. Yes, my emotions are a mess cause I still have the cravings but in the end, its better for you mentally and physically.
