Hello My name is Kristen. I have been on here several times about different topics, This last Saturday on July 2nd in the evening time I was just informed that my 28 year old son and my 8 year old granddaughter has been in a horrible motorcycle accident, They had to be air lifted to USC Hospital. They were both put in ICU and both had to have surgeries that same night. They are both alive and getting better each day. But I feel like I have been traumatized myself. I haven't been able to cope with my emotions at all and have litterally been going off on everyone, especially my family. Anyway the reason I posting this is for someone to maybe give me some advice or a coping skill they might think will help me right now. Thanks for listening to me.

Hello KristenRenee: I'm so sorry your family is having this terrible experience! Things you've probably already thought of are things such as: keep busy doing things, get in the see your therapist (if you have one) or get in to see one if you don't. (You may be dealing with the repercussions of this for some time to come. So trying to deal with it on your own may simply not be workable.)

What I try to do in my day-to-day life is to practice what the Buddhists term: "compassionate abiding". I strive to accept that whatever I am thinking or feeling is okay. I allow it to arise within me. I breathe into it & perhaps smile to it. I may even place my hand over my heart as a sign of lovingkindness & compassion for it. Then, after a few breathes, I drop the "story-line" (the specifics I'm thinking about) & then simply say with, breathe into, the underlying emotion be it fear, anger, anxiety, whatever... feel its power. I then allow it to fade of it's own accord.

I offer my healing thoughts to you, your son & your granddaughter with the hope that all will be well...

I am so so so deeply sorry for this tragic event in your life. My heart goes out to your family.

I would suggest an immediate therapy session. The hospital may have resources for families there. Maybe case managers to help with the emotional trauma.

Please speak with a professional to make sure you are keeping your emotional health during this horrible time.
