I was driving tonight and about 15 minutes from home two deer ran in front of me. I avoided the first one. The second one I clipped. I feel like I had to have broken the poor creature's leg(s). The car made a pretty distinctive "thud" and I thought the worst. My wife and I circled back twice to check for this poor thing. Then we went to a gas station so I could see what damage there was to the car. Amazingly, not even a scratch, or hair, or blood.

After the gas station we went back one more time to see if we could find it. Still nothing. On the way home we just prayed that God either nurse it to health and live a resilient life or if it did die, it didn't suffer

My biggest fear is this deer got it's legs broken and is laying in a field a hundred yards off the road suffering and just waiting to die.

If it's your thing, I just ask for you to pray for this creature. I feel terrible.

I hate the idea that somewhere in a field a deer is lying injured.

I really hope that it got out of the way in time.

even though you said you heard a crunch, maybe it was something else.. maybe it was a bit of twig, or a rock, or something

deer (and other animals) are more intelligent than we know. the fact that you couldn't find it makes me hope that it got out of the way in time

Thanks, emily, but I am 1,000% percent sure I hit it. There's no way it was anything else (although I pray that I'm wrong).

It was dark but after I hit it I looked in my rear view mirror to see if I could see anything. I think I saw the deer hobble on the shoulder for a minute. Just not sure and the uncertainty is the worst part. The thought of it suffering in a field is awful. I hope I just dazed it and it's okay but I have my doubts.

I’ve always been afraid of hitting a deer in a couple of places I lived. But thankfully I was always able to stop in time. I hope too you just clipped her and that she was just momentarily dazed. I do understand why you feel bad. But there’s nothing more you can do.if there was nothing on your car no dent or anything then maybe you didn’t do any damage. So maybe slowing down for the frost was enough to save the second?

Thanks. I have replayed the scenario over and over in my head second-guessing this or that. Sure, I avoided deer #1 and perhaps could have avoided deer #2 but a violent turn at 50 mph could have ended up badly as well. Lose-lose.

I sympathize with you. I hit a squirrel once and to this day I still can remember the circumstances around why I hit it and how I wish I could have avoided it. Sometimes there is just nothing you can do to avoid hitting an animal. Deer at night can be especially hard to avoid if they just suddenly jump out in front of you from the darkness. It’s nice that you have such a caring feeling towards animals. I’ll pray for comfort for the deer and hopefully it ended up okay.

Good! The day before yesterday when I read your thread it touched me. As I age, I’m more and more sensitive through animals and I know you had a bad time.
Luckily, you and your wife weren’t injured. It might be worst.
I understand how you felt towards this animal. Hope it’s ok.

So kind of you to remember, Azul, so thanks for that.

Yes, it shook me up a bit and I still think about that poor deer but I put it in God's hands and trust it all worked out. It really is out of my control and I accept that.

I have always been an animal lover so this hit home as you might imagine.

I once encountered a deer on the highway, i was at speed and it was in the median, continuing to leap across my path. I changed lanes (i never drive next to anyone if i can help it), then i heard the clatter of hooves on my rear bumper, like the clatter of reindeer on your roof at xmas. But we avoided a collision.

I told my therapist later, i could have died! Maybe god has a plan for me. T smiled and said, maybe god has a plan for that deer...

I do understand you. Then it’s feeling guilty when there are things beyond our power.
Take little but little. Try not think about it now. Try to get your mind busy so time will pass and it would be less painful. I did it with a dog I couldn’t help.
It was that or burst in tears. I was for a whole week that if I hadn’t my mind busy, I cried. I still can’t think about it.

I'm sorry you went through that. Some things are just unavoidable yet we carry this guilt with us.. I believe time will heal.
