Hi,
I've been posting a lot lately, but I've never actually touched on this before. You see, for the past few weeks, I have had almost no interest in stuff I used to love. Like writing and art, for example. I just don't feel any motivation to do them, and I don't understand why. My mom has asked my T when we were all sitting down together last session if she thinks I might be depressed because I never want to go out with friends and because I sleep a lot. Well I sleep when I can because school starts so early, and I go out with friends every few months because they always seem to be busy. But the loss of interest is what I can't explain. I know it's a symptom of depression, which is why I'm posting this here. Mods, feel free to move this if it doesn't belong. Does anybody feel similar? I mostly feel very bored all the time, just bored with life. I'm very irritable. But mostly, just bored.

((((IndieSoul)))))
When I was extremely depressed, I had no interest in anything and I was bored with life, especially bored with people and myself. I hope this helps, I do believe you are in the right forum.
Thanks for this!

Thank you The thing is, I don't feel extremely sad. I'm just bored. My anxiety is my big thing, but I'm learning to live with it because I've had it for so long. I just want my interests back. I used to love art, and was so motivated for it. What happened? I'm worried my interests might start shifting to something mundane like sports. I guess I am bored with myself. I'm bored with writing about the same thing over and over. But writing about a new thing doesn't really seem like something I want to do either. I guess it's my own fault because I don't try to get out more or put more variety into my life and my work. But that's my self esteem talking..

I know what you mean, losing interest in everything is one of the symptoms of depression, I have that too and I'm starting to get worried about college...I used to be smart, but lost interest in studying since a long time ago. :\
Thanks for this!

IndieSoul-
I definitely loose interest in doing things when I get depressed, even if I'm not particularly sad. I loose interest even in basic things like reading and watching TV, working on research, and hanging out with friends. It tends to be a constant for me when I get depressed. Part of my lack of interest seems to for me to be connected to my inability to concentrate on the things I would otherwise enjoy. If I can't concentrate for more than a couple of minutes on something, even something basic like reading becomes a task and hence not enjoyable. I hope you are feeling better soon.
Thanks for this!

Hi, IndieSoul! My growing impression is that depression is a multi-faceted monster who manifests somewhat differently in each individual sufferer.

IndieSoul's (Oversimplified) Depression Profile
  • boredom
  • loss of interest in previous passions
  • lack of motivation
  • irritability
  • not particularly sad
  • excessive sleep
  • social isolation
  • etc.
Rohag's (Oversimplified) Depression Profile
  • rarely bored
  • ever-wandering thoughts
  • inability to sustain focus
  • loss of interest in previous passions
  • lack of motivation
  • rarely sad
  • emotional emptiness
  • fleeting moments of uncontrollable terror/rage
  • stress-intolerant
  • erratic, disturbed sleep
  • social isolation
  • etc.

Thank you It just never really seemed like depression to me, because depression always seemed like intense sadness. Now I know that it is many other things as well. I'll talk to T about this when I see her next. Thank you for the imput everyone.

Hey Indie Soul,

Yip lose of interest is 1 of the symptoms. Finding the motivation just isn't there and energy to do anything including eat(well for me) is a huge step. I have just achieved a goal and that is getting up at 930am and walking to a local supermarket then coming to my folks house. This is a BIG GOAL for me as I have been isolating myself recently.

We are all different in respects to symptoms but we are all similar with the depression

Hope you find some piece of mind
Thanks for this!
