I've been feeling much better recently and have redisovered my interest in reading. It makes me feel calm. (I actually got the idea from someone on this forum, I can't remember who but thanks to whoever it was!!)

Does anyone have any books they recommend? I want to buy some on amazon.

Would be lovely if we could share our ideas here for some 'feel good' books to lift our spirits a little.

Any suggestions?

I read all the time now, it helps me to take my mind off of everything else!!! My family doctor recommended it to me when I was first diagnosed and I find it extremely therapeutic. I have actually found that I've been drawn to books about depression and that reading about it has helped me understand more about my illness and also to identify with the characters I'm reading about. Here's a list of what I've read recently that I've really enjoyed:

- Prozac Nation, Elizabeth Wurtzel (GREAT read, autobiography)
- The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath (FANTASTIC)
- Sarah's Key, Tatiana De Rosnay
- Girl Interupted, Susana Kaysen
- Push (Precious), Sapphire
- The Time Traveler's Wife, Audrey Niffenegger

Hopefully this gets you started. They've all kept me busy and thinking.

Good luck.

I love to read as well! What kind of books do you like - it's VERY hard to recommend a book to someone if you don't know the interests! Do you like fiction or non-fiction, sci fi, romance, mystery?

Some books I've read recently and liked are:
"The Blind Assassin" / Margaret Atwood (not about an assassin - the blind assassin is a fictional novel referred to in the actual book. Book is fiction set in Canada not too long ago, the best thing about the book is the way it's written)
Ender's Game (Orson Scott Card) and Dune (Frank Herbert) are great if you like science fiction

These aren't "feel good books" but they are very good. I can't think of any "happy " books right now but will be watching this thread =)

I'm glad you have the energy and interest to read! It's so good!

Reading DEFINITELY helps. I'm personally addicted to anything by Jodi Picoult. I recently finished her latest, House Rules, and I couldn't put it down. I wouldn't necessarily call it "feel good" writing, just GOOD writing that gets me out of my own head for a little while. Off the top of my head my latest favourites have been:

- The Fifth Life of the Cat Woman by Kathleen Dexter
- The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
- Sunbathing in the Rain: A Cheerful Book About Depression by Gwyneth Lewis (autobiographical and written in small chunks meant for people with depression who might not be able to focus for long stretches of time ... I've read this one so many times I've almost got it memorized!)

I also second the Time Traveler's Wife and Bell Jar. Two of my all-time favourites. Reading is such a simple pleasure, it's amazing what good it can do us.

Anything by Nora Roberts - love stories always make me feel better. Nice fantasy to get lost in. Her characters are really vivid and lifelike.

I recommend two:

The Help, by Kathryn Stockett
CloudSketcher (I can't remember the author right now)

Fabulous books.

when I'm down I read too I've been reading poetry more than anything lately but just being around a book in genral lifts my spirits!!

The World to Come by Dara Horn (Fantastic, the ending always makes me smile)

The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster (very quirky )

The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros (my fav book!)

The Final Solution by Michael Chabon (a bit slow going at times but well worth the lags in the plot at times)

My favorite book series is the Redwall series by Brian Jacques

And I always enjoy some e.e. cummings poetry when I'm down, his play with form and use of language abslutley thrills me!

Ohh, thank you so much everyone!
To answer turquoisesea I think I mostly like fiction, I love authors like Jodi Picoult and Cecelia Ahern but am open minded to trying anything.

Quite a few people have recommended the time traveller's wife, I might give this one a go!

At the weekend I bought (2nd hand in a charity shop) The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards. It sounds really good and I'm looking forward to reading it, once I finish Crow Lake which I'm currently re-reading.
