Hello, justus1228. I have seen many mental health professionals on my own. That said, I do not see any harm in having someone go with you. The specialist may have a preference.

Be well.

Justus1228, having someone go with you on the first appointment is a good idea, even if they don't talk to the doctor.

On my first appointment I took my son. He drove me which was a good thing because as soon as I started talking to the doctor, I started crying hard enough that I wouldn't have been able to drive myself home.

In my opinion, I think it's always good to have moral support around.

Good luck!

welcome to pc! i don't think it matters but if it gives you moral support then why not? if you decide to go it alone i'd write down what "your close person" to you observed. that might help even if they don't go with you. course the specialist will be the best source to determine what is. keep us posted.

Generally just seeing your regular MD and saying you think you're depressed will do. They have nothing invested with not believing you ... and can prescribe basic antidepressants if they choose to. If not, they can give you a referral to someone who will prescribe. I would still advise also seeing a therapist/psychologist with whom to talk. Learning how and why you are suffering under the sadness will help avoid it in the future.

It's definitely a good idea to get a professional opinion. I went on my own the first time (And every subsequent time) because I hadn't really discussed my concerns with people close to me, so I had no-one to take along.
It does help to take someone along if you feel anxious about the visit.
But don't worry about the doctor not "believing" you. They are there to listen to what you say, your symptoms, and make a professional recommendation.
