Sometimes I feel like "I'm not going out of the house today and won't be around people, so what's the point of exerting the energy to shower?"
And since I just stay home all day and don't really do anything, it's not like I get sweating and smelly... so I guess that's another I have no motivation to shower.

Actually, in all honesty, I feel like this more often than not. I usually only shower like 2 days a week... more if I am going out.
(I know... I am disgusting ) I just don't have the energy to do it. It literally makes me tired.... when I am finished, I almost need a nap.

Does anyone struggle with this?

Its a difficult one, i felt the same at the depth at my depression, i would lay in bed soaking and go to sleep, but it feels nice having a shower.
Try having one before u are about to go to bed anyway! x

Yep. (((hug))) If you aren't dirty, why shower, especially when it takes all that energy and thought, and if you don't care anyway... um.. what's the purpose? Been there (here?) done that. I find my dog sniffing my underarms and licking them makes me push to take that shower though!

When depressed it really is a good thing to continue doing what we know to be good and right for us, whether we feel like it or not, and that helps us climb out of the blackness.

I'm sorry, but that makes me giggle, but I can see how it would give you a "push" though. I don't have a dog though.

is it weird that it almost feels like I don't know what is good and right for me anymore? I feel like I am in a black hole that is so deep that I can't see even a glimmer of light...

My personal hygiene has become laughable. Miracle1986, if you're "disgusting," then so am I.

(JD), send your dog over to my house for a treat!

I have certainly felt as you do and when I am not going out it may be two days and even three before I shower if I haven't done anything physical but I guess we need to be doing more physical things to help with our lack of energy. I guess I remember how my Dad just sat on the end of the couch and smoked until he got really sick and died. I do want more than that so I fight it but it isn't easy. Don't feel you are bad or lazy just know we are in this with you too.

Hey there,

Ye that's me when I am severly depressed. If I am mildly depressed I will maybe not spend as much time in the shower as I would normally.

My OCD takes charge after a depression session. I will scrub like mad.

The only thing I MUST wash every day is my hair.

This is disgusting but I haven't shaved my legs in over 2 weeks... Yikes!!!!!!!
Thanks for this!

for me, washing hair is the same as taking a shower... you still have to get undressed and get in the shower and all that.
Ugh... it's a pain. So, I don't even do that.
I saw a commercial for TRESemme Waterless shampoos... I am sooo thinking about trying them out!
Especially this one... http://www.tresemme.com/Products/Fre...t-Dry-Shampoo/

Haha!!!

I just wash my hair at the sink or over the bath.

The dry shampoo is meant to be really good. I use to use it when I went camping years ago.

Hope you get showered soon lol

I have a forest growing on me haha!!!

I will be shaving tomorrow since I am going swimming
Thanks for this!

I am not talented enough to wash my hair over the sink and stuff. I wish I was though.

Thanks for the info about the dry shampoo!

Have fun swimming!

Glad I made you giggle...yeah it tickles too. But you do know what's good and right ... you do, inside. That's why you posted that you don't want to shower...you know you should when you need to. I have to wash my head daily or my scalp gets upset with me. I can do that in a tub bath though, and stay there till I shrivel up.

I am the same way. I seldom leave my house except to go to buy groceries or horse feed. I will go more than a week without showering. My horse doesn't care.

I used to think that too. Just recently a girl on another community said that it had been 8 days since she had showered. It helps to know that I am not the only one affected that way by my depression.

I also do this. I think it has been... uh... five days so far. :/ I always tell myself "Yup. I'll get up and shower soon.", except soon never comes.

Anyways, I never go anywhere or do anything, so the only person who has to put up with it is my husband. I feel like that should be enough motivation, but... I dunno. I feel bad.

I always have some excuse. Right now, my excuse is "The house is cold and it is pretty late. I will do it tomorrow." That sounds reasonable to me!
Thanks for this!

I find excuses easily too. Usually it is I will wait until it is daylight since we have no electric in the bathroom

exactly! I should want to be clean for him... but I honestly just don't care.
I have told myself I am going to shower today since I haven't done it since Saturday.
we'll see if it actually happens or not.

I too am glad that I'm not alone in this. My little secret is that I use baby wipes when I'm too depressed and exhausted to shower. It takes the edge off !!!!

I agree with Rohag.

I used to shower every morning, take a bath at night, do my hair, etc....
Now I may take a shower every now and then, my hair is in a ponytail all the time and I really don't care what I look like. I'm lucky if I get dressed at all. I've been known to stay in my PJ's all day...
Thanks for this!

I stay in PJ's most days actually.
It just feels like it takes too much effort to change clothes.

hmm wonders if she should tel them she has on many occassions outrun them all on how long.............. decides the ewwwwwws woudl be loud enough to hear from the antartic circle lol

its depression - we sit in the bottom of that hole and we cant see our way out and so whats the point? and theres no energy left and so sleeping or being in bed wihtyour eyes closed curled up in a ball is the idea that seems the best.........

thing is we all know the answer (JMO ) the less we do the less we want to do ... the more we do the more energy we wil get once we get past that point where we stop fighting to stay depressed . does that sound nuts? who'd want to fight to stay depressed??????

the way i look at it is this - if (and im trying to read my own mind here lol ) if i stay in bed exhausted and dont go out and dont shower and dont wash up and remind myself how grosse i am - and how i dont deserve antything anyway so its ok that i have this - and i probably need to be punished anyway - and hey if i do go out ill only do the wrong thing and spend money i dont have or eat stuff i shouldnt ...sighs well deep inside i think depression is safer.... does that sound completely insane??????

"I" dont think this is right - but i think inside i do.....and if im depressed then i dont really have to prove anything - or do anythign - or be anything . or even live....just exist.....

so i guess the answer - again jmo - is to start doing things - i am trying to do this cos i cant find my cat in my flat anymore lol (thats almost not a joke - sighs ) i do a couple of things then i have to lay down but iget up when i can again - sighs - its sooo hard...i stil just want to sleep ....

hugs to all who want them - hope i havnt cionfused the issue or gone off track ....

take cre

I'm so glad to know I'm not a freak for this. I am the same way. I have MDD and this is the worst it's been. I'm at the point now where showering takes up all of my energy so I generally only do if I absolutely have to go out of the house. I went almost 3 weeks last month.

Oddly enough, my husband said when I go so long I start to smell like food and not gross. It freaks him out.

Procrastinating is my number one hobby these days.
