Hello. I am a 35 year old man who has suffered from depression most of my life and it seems to be getting worse the older I get. I have yet to find any lasting solutions to this problem. I am looking for assistance in every way I know how. I need guidance on how to truly rid myself of this illness. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Derek, If I truly new the answer to this I likely wouldn't be on this site but I do know what has worked for me in the past. Therapy, medication, trying to eat right and get some physical exercise. I also try to go out and be with people even when I really don't want to. It is very hard and people who haven't gone through it don't understand it isn't a battle of will because I want to will this away with everything I have and it still won't go. Good luck on your journey.
Thanks for this!

Hello & Welcome, Derek Foreal!

Your other posts indicate you have tried many medications and you mentioned a therapist, yes? Have you gained anything from talk therapy?

Also, if you don't mind my asking, how is your sleep? Does your work impose rotating schedules on you?

Just need to let the Dr. know the depression continues to engulf you. I was very lucky that the first meds I took worked. Some people are not that blessed!! I was reading what Rohag wrote and apparently you have tried different ones. Sometimes its not about the meds but also about lifestyle. Make sure you are not self medicating with alcohol and other recreational drugs as the meds will not work if you mess with other stuff!!!!!. You also need to sleep and have a regular sleep schedule that you maintain. Diet is important too and you want to make sure the diet you are on is filled with healthy food choices, no caffeine or a lot of sugar!!

Depression is a bear and I do hope that you feel better!!

This Thursday will be my 3rd time to see the guy so we haven't really even started. He did recommend from the beginning that I start taking Antabuse for my alcohol abuse and I haven't had a drink in 2 weeks now. As far as my work, I work nights which is very hard on me. However, my boss and I have worked out a new schedule were I'll be working M-F (12p-8p). This will help balance me out and allow for a routine in which I plan to begin exercising regularly. This will in turn cause me to start eating right (speaking from experience). So we’ll see what happens…
Thanks for this!

Ah. My own journey into depression began with schedule variations and sleep disturbances. If you can regularize your sleep and, hopefully, improve its quality, you'll gain an something of an advantage in this struggle.

Wishing you increasing success!
