I have major depression - I have bipolar diagnosis. I'm also struggling thru withdrawing from sexual addiction. Life is hell sometimes. Besides sex, which I'm supposed to be avoiding, there are only four things that takes this physical numbness in my head away - food, sleep, exercise, and sneezing. They all temporarily give my brain a physical rush of something to make my head feel normal. But I still have no interest in life. Music used to be so important to me, and I'm good at playing the guitar, but that's all hard to do now, it's not fun anymore. What is there to do? Wait for things to get better? I'm over 40 and I hope this doesn't take up too much of my life. What can anybody suggest?

The line that stands out to me is "but I still have no interest in life". You say you have depression and bipolar, are you in treatment of any kind? Meds, therapy? I know I struggle at times with not finding joy in things at all. It's part of my depression. But as for just waiting for things to get better? I would say if you don't change anything it's not likely things will just get better. Exercise is definitely good! And as for suggestions I guess I would have to know what you are currently doing to try and help yourself... Thanks for posting this, I hope you are feeling better soon!

Yes, I am seeing a psychiatrist and a counselor. I don't think they know what to do with me, either.. that's just the impression I get. I have interest in life in the fact that I want to enjoy life again. But I have no joy in my life. Maybe that's better put. Everytime I laugh, it's fake. Smiles are fake. I suffer torment and confusion. Nothing is like it used to be. What am I doing to help myself? I don't know what to do. I mean some soft music is good, drinking plenty of water, trying to read a little to understand this illness. Some friends are avoiding me, because they are weary of my illness affecting them negatively. And I don't blame them. I'm needing a miracle from God.

Sneezing as something that helps depression -- interesting! I'm going to have to observe myself with that.

"Fun" and "joy" are real problems. I don't do well with those. I do better when I'm not seeking them and just let them happen occasionally.

Well, I know that with mental illness it sometimes takes a long time to figure things out. Wanting to feel better is really great! So is the fact that you are seeing people to get help. I guess I have two thoughts about your situation. First, it sounds to me like you are doing all of the right things. Try to be patient and keep working with the professionals to try and get better. Second, is going to a support group an option? NAMI has support groups for people with MI all over the country (assuming you are in the US). If your friends aren't supporting you with this that may be an opportunity to find people in real life who can relate to what you are going through. Good luck to you and I hope you are feeling better soon!

One book that might be helpful is called "Get it Done When You're Depressed" by Julie A. Fast and John E. Preston. It's kind of a work book also.

Your doctor may be able to give you some helpful suggestions.
