thank you petebenner! I have been concentrating on fixing my diet-no where near there yet-but I can't believe how much better I feel when I eat lots more vegetables and much less bread and sugar!!! the rest are good reminders too, thanks again!

This is basically a list of things that are in fact impossible for me to accomplish when I'm severely depressed.

I wish people could understand that depression is much more than a state of mind. And that I have as much control over it as I have control over the sun rising and setting every day. When you're as depressed as I've been over the past month, the hobbies that I cherish become meaningless wastes of time and effort. "Keeping positive" means nothing. I don't have time or energy to be physically active because I can't sleep and I work 45 hours per week and spend most of my extra time either trying to get some sleep or seeing doctors. My diet is fine, I don't eat red meat or chicken, I don't drink soda, I don't go to fast food restaurants, and I eat candy and chips once in a blue moon as a treat. My lifestyle is fine, my mental state is what's f'd up.

Why is this so hard for everyone to understand?

we all understand it, because we all have it. but we still have to fight it. it doesn't hurt to have a list of things to try....it won't cure you like it won't cure me. but maybe you could pick one thing and focus on that while you are seeking treatment. I have to stay on top of my depression constantly and the only way I can do that is to practice whatever techniques I can, to what ever degree I can at that given time. I know it is frustrating but try to assume positive intent here.

For some reason I find myself skeptical of this list.

I don't control my thinking, the media does that for me. Haha!

(I think I've been at University too long.)

Sorry, when I was depressed none of those would have worked.....only meds

Now, feeling blue...a totally different animal...these would work but for clinical depression.... sorry.!!........they would have been useless!!

I don't know missbelle... I felt kinda iffy about saying that. You are so right though... feeling blue/sad /down/troubled and having real depression is entirely different. Those suggestions are a bit like telling a quadriplegic that a nice brisk daily walk is what's needed. Makes you wonder where people are getting their conception of depression. Could it be those anti-depressant ads on tv?
Thanks for this!
