i worked at toys'r'us as a seasonal worker for the last two months. it was incredibly fun and i was really good at it. one of the hr ladies told me "you're like a superstar on the sales floor", they always told me how impressed they were with me. customers loved me. i know i was doing a great job. available anytime, for however long they needed me. everyone always came to me when they were looking for something, because they knew that i know where everything is. even the ones that have been working there for years.

well, today is the end of the season. i worked my full shift, and now i don't know if they are keeping me or not. i do not have any more hours scheduled for this week. but the schedule is not final yet either. some other seasonals have hours scheduled though. i asked the other hr lady before i left today, and she said the manager will decide and let me know wednesday if today was my last day or if they're keeping me.

it was clear from the beginning that i was looking for a permanent position. and the way things went i never had any doubt that they would keep me.

now i feel so low, i know i won't be able to handle it if this was it. this job was what kept me going every day. i know i'm going to crash big time if i lose that job.

i know it sounds silly, but this job means so much to me. and it's not only the job itself, but also the work environment there that's just awesome.

You could either try to fight the thoughts or let them run. Personally, I would make myself as comfortable as possible and let them run and keep on running...

As an aside, I think it's wonderful you found a measure of fulfillment and even joy working with toys. Who knows how much happiness your work produced and will continue to produce with time. Thank you!

I'm so sorry. Do you think you would learn anything that would make it worth the stress of talking to the manager about why you weren't continued? Your employers in the past have always treasured you as an employee. I'm stunned this didn't work out.

Hmmm... New York Business Journal: Toys R Us losses grow under weight of interest payments -- holidays to the rescue? December 10, 2012

If the 2012 holidays did not come to Toys R Us' financial rescue - and it does not look like this was the best of holiday seasons for retailers, then the company is probably trying to cut everywhere it can to improve its 4th quarter balance sheet.

You have no control over any of that. Hopefully, sometime in 2013 Toys R Us will again give the green light on hiring, and your great work may be remembered then...

thank you for trying to make me fel better,, but they ddi keep some of the seasonals. they sadi in the beginning they were going to keep six of us in the end. and i know they did, just not me. see, when the last schedule came out last saturday, i didn't have any more hours schedulaed after monday, whle other seasonals did. that was my first clue that something was wrong.

monday, christmas eve, i started at 6am, and for the frist few hours i was alone on the floor. i answered the phones and tok care of those people, tok care of the in store customesr, and was supposed to get as much reshop done as possible. i worked my *** off. i got it all done. without ever getting stressed or cranky.

i only missed two days the whole time, when i had laryngitis and bronchitis. as soon as the fever was down and i had a little bit of my voice back, i was back at work. sick as a dog. but i coulnd't leave them hanging. i went in after bing up all night puking, because they said they really needed me that day.

but nothing matters. none of the efforts i made matters. how can i ever feel secure at a job again? my perfomance at tru can not be topped, that's what i was born to do. and if that wasn't even good enough, how can i ever keep a job?

Hi whenwillitend,
I am sorry this happened to you. I will tell you I feel similar, sort of...I had a job that I was planning on leaving due to high stress and a horrible work environment but was fired before I could find another job...This devastated me, I was actually buying a house and had to back out as a result. This was two months ago and let me tell you something.. cuts just a job I know it sucks and it's a blow to your self esteem and confidence but you seem to know you deserved to stay.you were good at what you did so let another employer appreciate you for your worth

thnaks. but id on't think there's another job i would enjoy this much. i can't think of anything similar to it. besides, the work environment was so awesome. everyone was like family.

i cant even look at the toysection at oether stores right now. i lose it. i cant go anywhere near "my" store. i lose it.

this has completely destroyed me.

my purpose in life has been taken away. the thing that made me feel useful is gone.

the joy has been ripped from my life.

theres nothing left

I read through your thread, and I am so sorry this has happened to you.

Over the years I've gotten a lot of good ideas about jobs and job-hunting from the book What Color is Your Parachute? -- I believe it's that book that suggests when you don't get the job (or get to stay on in your case) that you ask them why and what was it that you needed to improve. You might have to be a bit of an actor to do this (hiding how you really feel), but you could either go in or call to speak to the one HR lady who was so upbeat about your performance and let her know that you are confused since it seemed like you were doing such a great job and every one seemed to count on you, etc. Tell her (if you can do it without getting too emotional) how much you really enjoyed working there, how disappointed you were that you were not kept on and then ask her if she could give you any advice on what you might have done differently that would have improved your chances of staying on at that job.

You never know -- those six people who were kept on may have known the manager or had some other unknown connections. It may not have been anything that was 'wrong' in what you did.

At a minimum it seems they should at least be kind enough to give you a nice written recommendation.

Again, I know it must really be tough to have to deal with being cut off like that. These ideas are ways (perhaps) in feeling less helpless about what's happened.

keep looking for open positions in the future at your store and keep in touch with the manager there and make sure they know that you really enjoyed working there....maybe you could try another toy store or working in the toy department at another store......

express your intrest and also see if anyone there would be willing to let you use them as a reference for future employment. Work environments are funny that way I have worked in ssome great environment that made me feel sad when I had to leave etc, but know there are most likely other places that will give you that same feeling. Keep working and getting your expierence up and what not wether or not you like the other place as much as you did at toys r us that way when a position opens up at toys r us, they will have hard time saying no and not keeping you on full time....

hugs hugs hugs

i looked on their website. they are still hiring for permanent positions. that hurts even more. and i told them pretty much daily how much i enjoyed working there, they were well aware of that. i even told them that i was enjoying it so much, i would do it for free.

they are the only toy store here. the next one is an hour and a half away.

i really enjoyed working so closely with the customers. that's what i was doing all day. helping customer after customer after customer. sometimes i had two or three customers at a time. and always took care of all of them. while other team members told customers they were getting the item from the back and then never returned. and then i foudn those customers who had been waiting for 45 minutes, and had them taken care of in three minutes. i had a lot of extremely happy and grateful customers. and they let the supervisors and managers know too. but it all didn't matter. no good deed goes unpunished.

i don't think i want to go back to work. i think i'd rather go back to being a homemaker and take care of home and kids. my husband is not cut out for that anyway.

this was such a horrible experience.

thank you for your suggestions though.

I'm so sorry Whenwillitend. It is very sad that they did not keep you on. However, I hope you don't give up entirely. There are other Toys R Us stores. It sounds like you would get a good recommendation from the last store you worked in. This could give you an edge somewhere else.

Who knows why they didn't keep you on? Maybe some of the other people were temps before? We could speculate all sorts of reasons but what we do know is that YOU were a great employee and they really liked you. Try to continue to seek employment in your field, this is just a bump in the road. O.K. maybe a BIG bump (it will take a little longer to get over). I wish you the best.

Sorry you are down. Sometimes it just takes time to get up again. Sometimes it seems like down is the place to stay. They just knock you down again. Find the fighter in you. The one who knows what you feel isnt right. Do it for yourself. Do it for the next in line. Feel how you feel. Sorry you are down
