Help, I'm wondering if this is where I should be or is there something more detailed for this particular type of depression. It's January in Oregon the worst month of the year for me always. I hate life, wish I could just check into a sanitarium for the next couple of months till the sun emerges. I'm 47, so I have all the correct information and I'm on antidepressants, but I just get tired of trying to hold on till spring. I'm hoping this type of contact will help some, because of course I don't want to be with other people now.

Hi Nana,

You're in the right place. Welcome! I have SAD also, and so do some others here. Even though you don't feel like it, talking to people and getting out and getting some exercise should help. Of course it's easier to say than to do. Seasonal Affective Disorder Have you tried light therapy? That might be one more thing that would make a difference, in addition to the meds.

Here's a little sunshine for you to help get you though:

Nana, I have SAD also, and I get a lot of help from light therapy. The light boxes are expensive, but worth it...also, my pdoc told me that sometimes insurance will cover some of the cost. Also, a doc told me once that if I didn't have a light, taking a walk outside about noontime is a good idea...get into the sun when it's at its highest.

Anyway, welcome to the forums...there are others here who can understand your SAD, so I hope you keep posting, to get some support through the winter.

Studies show that for people with SAD who don't get relief from anti-depressants, that light therapy combined with the meds works for most people. So does limiting sleep to early evening 8pm to 3am, waking up early and turning on the light therapy.
