I used to be a music junkie but then I realized that it just made my depressive feelings stronger. Like a drug, it seems to help temporarily but later it hits you back hard. After not having listened to music for a while, I'd become dull and emotionless. Anybody else feel like this?

No, but it's got to be the right music. Nearly any Mozart takes me out of my depression ... But then he wrote mostly in his manic periods, so he sweeps me there with him. I love Mozart! Classical music generally lifts my mood--especially concertos and sonatas.

That's interesting.. to me Mozart doesn't affect me emotionally..not nearly as some other composers at least. I like Mozart too nonetheless.

Yep; I agree, beautiful music can do wonders for the mind, just
as all visual images affect me. I have to be very careful about what I look at and what music I listen to it affects me so strongly.

Music definitely has an impact on my depression. Depending on the time of music I am listening to, it can help my depression or make it worse. I have to make an effort when I am feeling depressed not to gravitate toward sad ballads (a weakness of mine). I've found any uplifting pop songs tends to lift my mood to a degree.

Music affects me very deeply too. When I find myself in the "dark place" I find I avoid music altogether just in case it could possibly spiral me down further. I have just started to listen to my CDs again, but I'm very careful about what I put on. No love songs.
Thanks for this!

Music, especially the right music, is key to getting me out of my dark episodes.
I find that I have to load my own playlists so that I avoid any songs that would send me in the opposite direction of where I want to go. OR I go to my favorite oasis, DI.FM and choose a station that has music sans words. That way, I can listen to random music and dont have to worry about the words.
And I agree, when I am down, definitely NO love songs!!

Sometimes it makes me feel better, other times it makes me feel so much worse which makes me not listen to music altogether for a day or two. Although saying that, I don't think it does make me feel any better, just that it takes my mind away from other things.

In order to lift my mood I need a song with a beat. Be careful the music can lead you one way or the other.

I think music is extremely powerful... Used in a "good" way, it is like medicine. But like any drug, if not used correctly, can cause more harm than good...

I was nearly banned from a support site one time for voicing my opinions on this. I was just listening to the radio when 'Bad Sign' came on. Great dance tune and all the while I'm repeating how if it weren't for bad luck I wouldn't have no luck at all. If anything can make us into puppets, its music

With me it just depends on what I'm listening to. If I'm really depressed, sometimes I will listen to Frank Sinatra or something up beat and it does help a little, at least for the time being. If I'm anxious or stressed, I listen to something more on the mellow side. I used to purposely listen to depressing music or watch a depressing movie when I was depressed because I would cry and thought I was relieving some of my emotions--but then I realized that it was making my depression worse.
(good question)

For me it very much so, but it depends on what I listen to. When I'm driving I rarely listen to the radio because I don't hear much of what I really like. When I'm at home, I'll listen to my CDs while I'm cooking.

I don't like being in places where the music is "piped" in.

I can't believe a group banned you for having an opinion!! But I guess communicating online isn't always easy... And one song can mean a million different things to different people -- bringing one up, bringing another down...

Like the blues... Even though many of the songs are about tragic things in life, sometime when I listen to the blues, it helps my mood...

During one of my other practiculary bad bouts with depression, music was the only thing that kept me going. I would listen to my favorite band's discography everyday. I ended up in the hospital, but I clung to my mp3 player until the last moment when they take everything from you.
