A while back I posted here saying I wished I could develop a "Napoleon Complex" to offset the insecurities I see holding me back in life. Now I realize what a totally stupid thing that was to ever wish for.

I went to another site like PC. I browsed some posts by people with similar issues. I realized I was reading about times that others had apparently developed a bit of a Napoleon Complex ... and let me tell you, I feel like taking a shower now ... because what I realized is it apparently turns you into a judgmental, arrogant, overbearing, self-absorbed, vindictive *******. (Sorry for the vitriol; some of the specifics I found personally offensive and very triggering). As a coping mechanism, it is a bad joke at best, and just turns people into the very kind of personality they were likely tormented by in the first place.

So ... I am deeply sorry for spouting off about things I am clearly ignorant of. (Note: the Napoleon Complex is a popular term for compensating for perceived inadequacies, and is not a recognized disorder in the DSM).

Nothing wrong in admitting you were mistaken in previous thinking. Hey, at least you were thinking! Ive done it many times myself. Visually its like a castle Ive built in my mind, a fortress intended to be strong and repel all future attacks from the dark side but as time goes by I notice a few weaknesses in the castles walls and the rain starts to leak in. Theres nothing wrong in rebuilding a few of the walls, or even scraping the whole building if its that unsound and starting again. Done it many times and yes it is exhausting but in time you have a firmer foundation. I always think of those little guys in big trucks when I think of the Napolean complex but I know what you mean.

It is rather nice when we occasionally find that, even as weird and strange and maybe damaged as we perceive ourselves to be, sometimes we find there are people out there worse than us . Sometimes those insecurities you mention can be turned into strengths, it may be just a matter of seeing them from a new direction. Bear in mind that every strength and weakness has a shadow side, every good point has a nasty side and vice versa. We just need to learn more about ourselves to know this, but that only comes with experience and life... with making mistakes and learning .
