I have most symptoms of depression but I'm so fearful to see a doctor about it.
I have no idea what I would say or even what they would say. I feel silly just going in there and being like 'heeeey, I think I'm depressed?' Then again I'd probably be too shy to even speak. How do they diagnose you? What questions do they ask? How was it for you? like what did you say? How did they respond? Granted it's different for everyone, I'm just trying to get a feel of what to expect. I'm the type of person that when asked a question my mind goes completely blank. If this happens at the doctors, I'll end up looking like a right attention seeker or something. Sometimes I just wish I had someone to go with me, someone I could talk to and tell everything to. |

It won't be as bad as you think. You will be asked questions to see how severe. I was once even handed a paper with questions to fill out. You won't be treated like you're crazy or making it up. They will want to know how long it's been going on, how it is affecting your life, if you've ever been treated for it before, are you suicidal, do you self harm, does it run in your family? Answer honestly. Depending on these answers you will probably be started on medication and refered to a psychologist.
I also have trouble answering questions or just talking in general, but I guess I got my point across. My doctor actually made me feel a lot better about myself. I always work things up to be much worse than they are. Good luck! |

Personally, I think a therapist would be better equiped to diagnose you. Nothing against GP's, many people see them for anti-depressants.
I know you are probably scared about bringing up the subject, but there isn't the stigma that goes with mental illness that there used to be. Just be honest, tell your Dr. why you think you are depressed and what you can do about it. Sometimes, if you go to a therapist or psychiatrist, they will have you answer a written set of questions that help rule out some problems, and rule in others. Which every you go to, if you have the guts to go in the first place, then you have the guts to ask about it. I commend you for that. Many people either go into denial or simply can't make themselves go forward. Let us know how you are. Sam2 |

I went years suffering in silence until things got bad, I felt the way you do for years but then I had enough and went to see my GP, If you don't know where to start with talking maybe write down the way you're feeling and give it to your GP I found this helped me, I was lucky that I had a doctor that was very understanding, She later referred me to a psychiatrist as things did not improve and was then diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, I am now in therapy. Good luck and let us know how it goes ![]() |

Most doctors are understanding or at least know what depression is. Your doc will ask you about how you are feeling and try to get a gauge on severity. Like whether it is mild and you are a little down all the time to the point you are a danger to yourself. She will probably go through the symptoms of depression to see how many you have. She may suggest medication and or therapy based on your symptoms. I wouldn't worry to much, they are just looking out for your health, but physical and mental.

Is there a family history? And there are many more questions they will ask. It took, a few visits, before I was even prescribed meds. Then the follow ups, involved asking specific questions pertaining, I feel, to side effects that may arise. Most doctors are trained to know how an attention seeker behaves, and you've written that your mind goes blank, when asked questions and personally that sounds the opposite of attention seeking, but that's how I read what you've written. You could always write down, what it is that brings you there. And another question, they do ask, is are you currently in therapy. ((well, I'm talking about the prescribing doctors here, not the talk therapists, because you've mentioned how do they diagnose?. I did see one psychologist who has a Phd, that administered the psyche eval. That could be part of the dx process, too) Best of Luck, whatever choice you make ![]() |

Thanks to all.
I wish I could get a Psychiatrist or Psychologist or something, I feel like that would be easier for me, even though I hate talking to people about things, but I just don't have the money. Plus there aren't many where I live, not that I can find anyway. I keep telling myself to make an appointment at the doctors but I just can't. ![]()
