Does anyone else have trouble with repetitive sounds. I have always had a little trouble with noises -dogs barking, loud squeaking- but since my depression has worsened I find I can't take even the smallest sound. Example...plastic grocery bag in back seat of truck crinkle, criNKLE, CRINKLE. Stop truck, get out, slam bags into the bed, get back in...sigh...peace. Also difficult to hear what someone says if in a crowd all of the little sounds drown out the voices. And flipflops

I'm easily overstimulated and very sensitive to noises. Dogs barking, distressed (or "misbehaving" toddlers in stores), people smacking gum, people eating "noisily," television, and so on. It's hard to deal with and affects my daily functioning. If my mood is erratic - I become hypersensitive and it's extremely difficult to cope with it. I relate to how you feel.

Hell yes! I'm having a bad year so far, and everything you mentioned hits home. Someone getting ice cubes out of the freezer clunking them around in that plastic bucket... rattling bags of any kind... clanking dishes... people walking by talking too loud (esp on their phones)... barking dogs are the worst. I have wicked tinnitus (ringing in the ears) so I like to have a soft continuous sound like a fan or AC blowing when I want to sleep. I have to stay away from noisy environments and people, which can be hard living in a tourist area.

Hi, I'm suffering from depersonalization, and I have all the symptoms of which you speak. I go to my room, put on the music and try to relax, meditation helps me in this case.

We have a cat that likes to lick plastic bags. While we sleep. Drives me insane.

Is this recent? AV747 has hit on something. Symptom. If you are currently seeing a medical professional, definitely bring this up. There are physical and mental causes for this type of symptom. And, realistically, plastic bags and flip-flops aren't going away anytime soon.
Not that I go to a lot of movies, but when I do go I bring a pair of ear plugs with me. I don't put them in all the way. Just enough so that I can listen comfortably. Hang in there! ![]() |

Did you talk to your doctor about this ? Sounds you mention are all around us and hard to avoid, if they bothering you this much, may be you should do something about it, so that you can ease.

These don't solve all mysteries, but I recommend searching on the following:
misophonia hyperacusis sensory defensiveness

I have this problem too. I think it's connected to my short temper, probably from BPD. I get really angry with noises like crumpling papers.
I'm also hypersensitive and jump at almost any loud noise.

It sounds like maybe you have sensory processing disorder. I do not have Autism (that is where SPD usually makes it's self known) but I am learning disabled. On "good" days, sounds don't phase me too much. But when I am especially anxious or depressed, some noises can make my teeth feel like they're vibrating. I've been like this since I was a child. Maybe try some self soothing techniques? I find weighted objects helps me deal with repetitive noises. Even keeping a book on my chest helps. I hope it starts getting easier soon, I know it's hell.

The first two I've heard of/read about and they don't quit fit, however sensory defensiveness is new to me and very interesting. Not only does the hearing part fit well, but dislike of touch is all me. Cannot tolerate anyone touching me, even if my wife touches my arm I have to stop myself from pulling away. I thank you, now off to do some research.

I think that one good reason why my depression increases during this time of year is because of having to deal with increased noise. The windows are all opened and I can hear all kinds of noises from the outside that I'd rather not hear at all. Plus I live near an airport (fortunately it's an airport for small planes) and it seems like they are louder at this time of year. It's really annoying when I'm have a peaceful time listening to music that I like, and then the airplanes drown it out.
Also the guy who lives in the next condo unit to me can sometimes play his music really loud. It's not only loud, but bassey, too. It's like a "boom-boom" sound. It's hip hop or ghetto music and it's horrible. Sometimes during the nights he has it going while I'm watching a movie. |
