I used to look forward to shopping day. I'd meal plan all week, look up recipes and loved trying new recipes. Now I have no motivation at all to go shopping for food or to cook, so when it's time to eat I just make something simple for my daughter like a sliced apple with cheese cubes, or a pb sandwich, French toast, or boiled eggs. I eat out waay too much lately and I still haven't gone shopping yet. How the hell do I find the motivation to do this?? Ugh. I hate being an adult. I wish someone else would do it for me

Have you checked with your doctor to see why you might be feeling this way? If not, then maybe you should get a check up.

Or if you already are seeing a psychiatrist and are on medication it might be time for an adjustment in your meds.

At least you go out to eat when feeling like that.....shoot, I don't even go out to eat.....I just go days without eating.... I'm glad my eskie dogs don't leave me alone when they are hungry or I would end up forgetting to feed them also.

I'm on lamotrigine for depression, 150mg which I thought was a high enough dose but apparently that's pretty low ?
I wish I'd not eat for days, then I'd lose weight and my dr and I would both be happy. I binge eat so I'm too weak to control myself. I must admit since he put me on topiramate, I have been less hungry and haven't had a true binge since, and have actually gone 24 hours without eating a couple times.

I know what you mean about having no motivation to shop or cook. We spend so much time preparing grocery lists, checking grocery store flyers, shopping, putting the groceries away. Then we have to prepare meals, cook them and then clean up. It all takes so much time! I really wish I could have one of those food generators from Star Trek. You tell the machine what you want and it makes it. When you're done eating, you put the dirty dish in the machine and it disappears!

At the very least, can't we just take a pill that contains all our nutritional and caloric needs? That would save so much time and hassle. I would pay good money for that!

I have found a way to make nutritious meal quickly. I have a programmable rice cooker that I use so much that it never gets put away in the cabinet, lol. It also does slow-cooking, steaming and a bunch of other stuff. It's a Panasonic SR-DE102. I cook chicken cutlets or strips on my George Foreman grill. Or I'll cook hamburgers. I buy lots of frozen veggies. I combine them all in a bowl and top with cheese or premade sauces from the grocery store. I especially like the Indian sauces at Whole Foods Market. So, I have my whole grain rice, my lean meat, veggies galore and a little extra. Very fast and easy. And I have only one bowl and one fork or spoon to clean up.
Thanks for this!

I love food, unfortunately I don't have the energy to cook anymore but there is not much better than a home cooked meal. I love to cook a real meal with all the fixings, just need to get the energy back to do it. I am going to do Thanksgiving again, I have every year since my mom got sick about five years now. I do everything home made and spend two days doing it, it and Christmas cookies are one of the things I still love about the holidays.

Trying to lose weight, especially around holidays is next to impossible, allot may be going on in your mind and body, so not wanting to shop or cook, is understandable, but talk with your doctor to see if anything else is going on.

Well, we always have turkey at my sisters house--she does the turkey--and everyone just brings something. This year, we get to choose what we want to bring. I'm thinking of just bringing the canned cranberry sauce and canned pickle beets that I got from the food pantry!

But yeah--I don't have motivation for cooking so much anymore either.

It went pretty well. I find when I plan too much and make a menu and then grocery list, it makes me more stressed out and anxious. I just went and grabbed things I wanted and stuff that was on sale. Now to work on not eating out as much :/ and cooking at home!

I feel the same way, but because I have no one else to look after/cook for, I just don't eat. Or wait until I have a little spark of something and I'll go buy some vegetables, fruit, and tofu.

I don't eat out much because it's such a hassle…I'm vegetarian and I can't eat dairy. So everything has to subbed or changed and there's usually maybe one or two things I can eat on a menu with the substitutions. It's miserable. But if nothing else, at least you're eating, right?

I am forever in a funk & have little or no motivation for most things - but I love good food. A while ago I got to looking at some recipe videos on YouTube & motivation sprung out of me. I think the first one was a recipe for homemade baguettes. I couldn't wait for the next day - in the middle of the night I got the flour & yeast out & the result was the most pitiful specimens of baguettes you have ever seen. But I didn't stop - I watch these videos & can't wait til the next day! My favorite is Foodwishes.com. As for eating with others, I can't get out of my funk enough for social involvement - that's another issue - I suppose if I wanted to there are more than enough people who would like Ragu alla Bolognese or Chicken with Mustard Mascarpone Marsala Sauce - and my latest craze has been oven baked herb spatchcocked chicken!

I think I'm gonna stock up now that there's some good stuff on sale so I don't have to go grocery shopping for awhile. I have really come to hate shopping, it stresses me out. Not the actual shopping, but the planning and worrying on what I should buy.

I'm too depressed most of the time to leave the house. When I do I shop for a week's worth of groceries since I usually only work up the courage and energy to leave the house once a week.

The only thing I really cook is soup in a slow cooker. I recommend a slow cooker to everyone. You can make big batches and portion them for the freezer.

My heart goes out to everyone here who is too tired or depressed to cook and shop. I know exactly how you feel.

I've gotten some of my motivation back. I've been making pancakes from scratch/French toast for my daughter and I for breakfast all week (which isn't good when I'm trying to eat healthier but hey it could be worse)
I made a soup yesterday for supper, haven't done that in awhile.
I'm actually looking foreword to grocery shopping when I get money on Friday.

I haven't cooked a real meal for over a year, probably closer to 1 1/2 years. If you couldn't heating things in the microwave then I guess I have cooked. I eat fast food almost every breakfast and dinner. I don't eat lunch because it's too much trouble to bring food to work and if I leave my parking space to go get something it won't be there when I get back and I would have to walk really far most likely. Ain't happenin'.

I was told that this is all because of my depression. It can make you lose motivation and desire.

But eating well may be essential to mental health well-being. I feel better as I am changing my diet because of my kidneys (avoiding pre-made food, meats, etc)
At least, could you bring some nuts and fruit for lunch?

I have no motivation at all when I'm in an episode of depression. Just tough it out and you should be able to function in a couple days. Is there anybody who could bring you some things from the grocery to tide you over this episode?
