Anyone have insomnia going on Lamictal? I take a remeron at night and that knocks me out for a few hours then I can't sleep worth a darn. Get up at 3 or 4 am and feel horrible. I don't like this....sleep is my coping mechanism. Not a good one but true.

Remeron is an antidepressant which had a side effect of helping you sleep

Maybe it is not the right AD. I am ending Zoloft because it made me so tired. Took me a while to figure out it was the med because of what I was going through. I am big into sleep too but I don't like anything the "knocks me out". I attempt herbal and aromatherapy solutions first. A lot of people use to sleeping pills don't think they work but I can tell you they do. In fact there are studies showing chamomile works. Typically they only put you in a relaxed state and your body does the rest. Best if you develop a nightly ritual (another opportunity to practice mindfulness ). There are times when that is just not enough and I will resort to some sort of pill but since it is so rare I just use an OTC. In general I sleep too much which is why the Zoloft was probably a bad choice. I don't know if my story will help but maybe it will give you some ideas.

Also consider age and and things like caffeine intake. As I get older my ability to drink even an early afternoon caffeine beverage and expect a good nights sleep is decreased.

I don't drink any caffeine past 10am. I do take Melatonin and it seems to help. Chamomile tea does work. I have used it alot but don't currently have any. I had really good sleep patterns until I started on Lamictal. I started at 20mg for two weeks then 40 for two weeks. By then I was getting used to it and getting a good nights sleep. Then I went to 100mg a day and man has it screwed up my sleep. I am kinda surprised because it is not an SSRI. The SSRI's has always screwed up my sleep but I always adapt to them. The best sleep I ever get seems to be sleep 4 hours and wake up every two hours. It seems much more important for me to get the right kind of sleep and not how much i wake up. Effexor has always screwed up stage 4 sleep but then i adapt to it. What also is weird is that they gave me Lunesta to try for two weeks and it didn't do a thing. A couple of years ago they gave me ambien and I had to take three of them for it to do anything. That is the only time i have used sleeping pills. The OTC's don't work for me. They are all just antihistamines. They gave me hydroxyzine for anxiety once which is a prescription antihistamine but it didn't do a thing. I think I will ride it out and see if I adapt before I think about switching again.

Maybe 40 to 100 was too big a jump. If it were me I would take the least invasive path and reduce Lamictal to 75 for a couple weeks instead of adding a med. Every med is another chemical complication and if sleep is the only thing you are trying to fix right now it doesn't make much sense. It might to you and your doc though. just not what I would do.

No sleep was not the issue. I was taking abiliffy Effexor and a low dose of Remeron. We got rid of abiliffy and added lamictal because I was cycling rapidly in and out of depression. A month of depression than a week of feeling good. Lamictal is a mood stabilizer for bi polar but is now being prescribed for mdd. Not sure if it is approved or off label. It is supposed to help with rapid cycling in mdd. I have cycled my whole life, usually three real bad ones a year. Now they are deeper more severe and last much longer, in the last five years anyway. And added anxiety and paranoia when real bad. Now this rapid cycling. The nature of my disease is changing as I get older. Sleep problems didn't start until lamictal. When I am in a real severe depression nothing works. It just has to run its cycle. That has always been the case anyway. I have been doing much better overall since starting lamictal.

Off label. I take it too. It is known to be activating. I'd still reduce the Lamictal by 25 but that needs be yours and your doctors choice.

Really? I take Lamictal at bedtime to mitigate any possible side effects of drowsiness. Everyone needs sleep. That's not a coping mechanism.
