I've always been one to get really into characters from movies and books and TV shows. I feel like some of them could be my friends, or at least I'd like them to. It makes me feel a bit less lonely. This probably seems, stupid, but one of my favorite characters died, and I felt overly upset. Like that character actually died. After finishing the series, I went back and looked for my favorite moments with that character, almost like it's nostalgic watching these videos. I feel so sad that these things happen to these characters, but I try to remind myself that they aren't real....and yet I still feel so upset. This is really weird, and I wasn't sure where else to put this, but uh...if someone could just kind of help me out with this that'd be nice. ( also may I add, I've almost picked up some of the same habits as the character)

Well, you definitely aren't alone. I love to read... some might say to an almost unhealthy level (it could be because I can sit for HOURS, not moving until I start to get a muscle spasm in my neck). But what can I say... I like to get lost in a book. It's better than being lost in my head.

Getting attached to a character is easier and safer than getting attached to a real person. I think it would be unnatural not to mourn the loss of anything that brings you genuine happiness. Crying, or rereading (even the entire series) seems like a good reaction.

Within reason, of course...

Now, if you did something like shave your head and take a vow of poverty over a Hunger Game character... you might need to reconsider your priorities.
..but even then again... if it was over the biography of Mother Theresa or Ghandi... it could seem within reason.

Do you mind me asking which series you were reading?

People don't have to exist for you to feel connected to them That's the most amazing parts about stories because you resonate with different characters and go on adventures with them. The imagination combined with words and other storytelling forms is a powerful thing. I have definitely cried over the loss of a fictional character. If anything, even though it hurts try to savor it. It means they meant something special to you and that's fabulous.

Paynful and Keeprolling say it well. Your feelings of grief testify to the liveliness of your mind and expanse of your imagination and heart, Izzyfg2000.

As the grief allows, step back and try to form a third-person view of your whole experience with the character and series.

Thanks for the tip! I'm always trying to look for new things to spark my interest. While I don't know the difference between anime and manga (I assume one is something to watch and the other to read... ?), I will definitely check it out!! But if you had to recommend one over the other, which should I check out first?

At the moment, I'm slightly obsessed with The Walking Dead, and can't decide if I like the show or the "graphic novels" better. Either way, I love them both.

I recommend you watch the anime series first! Which is the animated version ^_^ All the episodes are on YouTube actually. Just search Death Note episode one...and so on and so forth.
