I've been without one since last November, and trying to pretend that everything is ok. But the last couple of weeks have been really bad, and I've been working on getting someone that can meet my needs. Making phone call after phone call, getting referral on top of referral.
I REALLY need structure, and have never gotten enough of it in one-on-one therapy. A lot of therapists, even if they are trained in something like CBT, prefer to do talk therapy. I HAVE ENOUGH INSIGHT, THANK YOU VERY MUCH (er, sorry to shout, there). I need TOOLS to help me change. And someone to help me learn how to use them. But I have an appointment with someone who actually DOES CBT and DBT, and things are looking up. sarah

Sarah,
Good for you! I like that you know what you want and kept looking until you found it. I'd really like to know how it goes and how you like it. Most therapists seem to be eclectic - they draw from various different theories and methods to find what seems to fit their style and help the individual client. My last T seems pretty humanistic, which is fine and there is a lot that I like about Rogerian counseling, but it did feel like it lacked structure. Since I'm trying to get into graduate school in psychology, I'm also looking for something that will fit my style and be helpful and effective, and there is a lot about CBT and DBT that sounds good, especially that they are backed up empirically. Good luck with it! Wendy <font color=orange>"They accused us of suppressing freedom of expression. Sarah,
I am very new here, and new to therapy. I apologize but I dont know what CBT or DBT. My therapist just asks me questions and lets me talk. When she needs she prods me in the right direction. I hope your new therapist works out well! I dont like feeling this way, and dont want anyone else to. Good luck!! Mike |
