Hi,
I have depression and severe mood changes but I'm able to function well overall. My biggest hurdle is not wanting to go out by myself. If someone comes with me, then I'm fine. I am anxious when I have to go by myself. What could I do to change this since it's creating a lot of stress. I'll dread going to the store. But once I'm in the store I'll like it and enjoy shopping till it's time to return. Also I hate driving. Does anyone feel like this??Help. |

Hello & Welcome, Pinkvilla.
I have had similar feelings, but maybe not as severe as yours. I no longer drive so I rarely go anywhere by myself. Are you receiving treatment for depression? Have you told your doctor or therapist about this particular problem?

As far as driving locally and going grocery shopping, I have no problem with that. However, there are places that I don't go out by myself to. I don't eat out by myself. Also, I would never go to a movie by myself. I used to do that.
But what's really bad is that I used to go on vacations by myself and enjoyed it. Not anymore! And what's really bad is that many years ago, I drove cross-country (3,300 miles) seven times within five years. And now when I got out to the country from where I live 30 miles away, I feel terror. What has happened to me? |

No I haven't talked to my therapist about it. Is it anyway connected to depression? May be I should tell my therapist about this. I'm so glad for this forum.
Thanks guys for your response. |

On the one hand, I understand depression and anxiety are distinct disorders. On the other, I also understand a certain noticeable percentage of depression sufferers also suffer from anxiety.
I carry both diagnoses. Yes. Tell them everything you've mentioned in this thread. Wishing you less suffering and more functioning...

Depression and anxiety often go hand in hand. I get anxiety real bad lately when I am severely depressed. This is new to me in the last five years. I get paranoia with it. When I am in a depression and get the anxiety I can't leave the house. When I am not depressed and get anxiety I also don't want to drive or go to the store but I am able to do it and walk through it.
I have a friend with severe anxiety and he forces himself to do everything and walk through it but it is extremely uncomfortable for him. He hasn't fully accepted his condition yet so is not willing to get treated for it, but that is what he needs in my view. I don't know if you are getting treated or not but maybe treatment can make it better for you.
