How do/should I tell my Mom that I have depression? I understand that she loves me and probably wants what is best for me, but that doesn't make it any easier.

I think it depends on what your mother is like, and you know her better than we do. :P

It's hard telling your parents how you feel. I've had depression for quite some time but not too long ago, I got severely depressed. I couldn't eat or get off the couch/bed. She noticed and asked why I was sad. I couldn't tell her at first but 3 days later she asked again and I told her I felt really depressed and I needed help. I'm having my first visit with a therapist this Thursday.
If she doesn't notice how you're feeling then just say it. I know it's very very hard but I wish I would have done it before I got that bad. I've been in your position and now that I've been through that. I realize that it wasn't really that big of a deal. I mean, what are we afraid of? You know she loves you and cares for you. She'll be glad you told her, trust me. You can do it, I believe in you! Sending you good vibes from here! ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I don't know any other way then to just say.......I think I am depressed and need help.
I would hope your mother would try to help you get that help. Even if she cannot understand she can be supportive and help you get what you need. she can also educate herself about it. As you say she loves you and want what is best for you but often feel powerless in how to help. Education can solve that.

Good luck telling her, just be upfront and honest. Her response to it would be her own discretion.

Thank you all for the support. How do I tell her, if I have scars though? That's the first thing (as far as what I know) that they check for.

I think it sounds like you want to tell her, so you should. Tell her first that you just want her to listen to you and not judge.

It was 8 years before I told my mother and I only told her because my Ts and siblings pushed me to do it. But anyway, I called my mother and told her I was seeing a therapist and asked if she would come to an appointment to which she agreed.
I had a lot of sh** to tell her so I wrote it out and read it to her during the appointment. I wouldn't have told her with out having one of my Ts with me. In my case I needed my T to deflect her negative reactions and to also explain the different issues I was dealing with. You may want to let your mom know you are seeing someone and ask her to come to a session with you. Having your T there to help explain what you are going through as well as support you may make it easier. |

Are you in school? Is there a school counselor you can confide in and who could help you tell your mom?

I am in school, and I do have a wonderful person who has been helping me through everything. She has convinced me to write a letter, but I'm not sure when I'm going to give it to her. I'm just tired and scared. Meow.
