I spent $300.00 that I don't have going to a psychiatrist today. He prescribed for me an $80.00 medication that I cannot afford. Last week I sought help at a public mental health clinic that would have been cheaper, but they told me they cannot help me because they do not accept my insurance. I asked if there was anyway I could be seen and pay for services on a sliding scale. They gave me the crisis line number and said I would have to call that number and go thru a bunch of hoops basically to get an appointment. I broke down and told my husband that I went to see a psychiatrist today and now he is all upset. He wants me to quit my job. I don't know what to do anymore. I feel like a total failure. I have had migraine headaches all week. I should have canceled the psychiatrist appt. and seen my medical doctor who is cheaper and friendlier. I am tired of having such a miserable life and I am probably better off dead than alive.

Sorry I can't add any useful words right now... but hang in there, see this as just a moment in time, is done, in the past and if you can, book an appointment with your doctor... perhaps relaying some of what the p-doc said... which I guess might actually make the best out of what initially seemed like a bad experience.

I'm so sorry you are feeling this way and having this trouble.

You are definitely not a failure--getting help from a pdoc when you need it doesn't mean you are a failure. We all need to look to others for help when things get bad.

We're all here to support you. You are a person of value.

Can you see your medical doctor and tell him what happened? It's possible he'll be able to prescribe you a cheaper med.

  • pdoc you can't afford
  • prescription you can't afford
  • public mental health clinic that won't accept your insurance
  • crisis line that requires the focus and capabilities of someone not in crisis in order to secure an appointment...

This is . . . frustrating.

Frustrating, indeed; what was all that chatter about the affordable care act?

I do hope that things get better for you. If there is a psychology graduate school in your area, there might be a clinic associated with it where you can get very low-cost, or even free therapy from a graduate student. As for the Rx meds, are generics or samples available to you? When I was first prescribed medication, my MD was very generous with the samples when I informed him that I had no prescription coverage.

The Affordable Care Act had good intentions but I am afraid it has become a disaster. Some doctors won't take Obamacare insurance. Last year I had a good insurance policy, $50.00 copay to see a doctor, prescription drug coverage, good coverage for X-rays, surgery. This year our company gave us insurance that is worthless. No co-pays, no medicine coverage, everything out of pocket, $3000.00 deductible. Some of us tried to see if we could get in a non-employer group to get decent insurance but we found out that could not be done. I have heard of people paying $500.00 to $1000.00 a month for insurance that covers very little. But, we make the best of what we have.

I paid $75.00 today for a refill of old migraine headache medicine. I made an appt. to see my medical doc on Wednesday for help with the migraines and help sorting all this out. One of the girls at work overheard me making a doctor appt. and was mad. She wanted me to change the appt. to a different day but I wouldn't. This time I stood my ground. I am in physical pain with the migraines and I have to have help with them or I'm no good at work or anywhere else. If I get "in trouble" or people get pissed off too bad.

So sorry that this happened. Please see your medical doctor again, there has to be help somewhere. My situation has also left me without a pdoc and little help of getting one, it hurts so much to feel that we are not important enough for help.
